How to Replace the Whirlpool Washer Wash Hub

Step 1 — Confirm the diagnosis#
A stripped hub shows up as an agitator that moves while the basket stays put, often with no fault code at all. Even so, enter diagnostic mode first — typically a 3-button sequence within 4 seconds, per the tech sheet — and read anything stored. F7 E1 points at the shift actuator or motor sensing rather than the hub, F5 E1 is the lid switch, F8 E1 is a water-flow fault, and F0 E2 is oversudsing. Clearing those rules out look-alike problems before you tear anything down.
Step 2 — Open the cabinet#
Take off the console by removing the 2 Phillips screws at its ends and flipping it back. Release the cabinet spring clips by sliding a putty knife in about 2.5 inches from each front corner and pressing each clip; there are 3 clips in all. Lift the top on its rear hinges, then pull the 2 rear lower screws and lift the cabinet straight up off the base for full access. Step 3 — Reach the hub#
With the cabinet off, lift the agitator out with the removal tool and expose the hub where the drive shaft meets the basket. Inspect it directly: rounded or sheared splines confirm the failure, and you will often find the plastic driver above it chewed up as well. While you are in here, eyeball the neighboring shift actuator, motor coupler, and suspension rods so you are not back inside next month.
Step 4 — Remove the failed hub#
Back off the retainer with the spanner wrench and lift the old hub off the shaft. Whirlpool internal fasteners are usually Phillips #2 or Torx T20, so if a Phillips head will not bite, switch to T20 before you force it. Keep a towel and a shallow pan under the area for the water that always lingers in the outer tub.

Step 5 — Fit the replacement#
Set the new hub on the shaft in the same orientation as the original, aligning its splines cleanly before it seats. Torque the retainer to the figure your tech sheet lists rather than guessing — under-torque and the hub works loose and re-strips, over-torque and it cracks. Reconnect any harness you moved until each locks with an audible click; a half-seated connector is the top cause of an immediate repeat failure.

Plug the machine in while it is still open and run the diagnostic spin so you can watch the basket turn with the agitator. Confirm the hub drives the tub under load, then unplug again before you touch anything.

Step 7 — Reassemble and run a full cycle#
Rebuild in reverse: drop the cabinet over the frame, align the rear hooks first, and push forward until the spring clips snap home. Run a full Normal cycle with warm water and a small load, and watch the basket, the drain, and the console for any returning symptom or code.
