How to Replace a Whirlpool Washer Inlet Valve

Whirlpool uses dual-solenoid inlet valves with separate hot and cold paths, each opened independently by the main control board — which is why a washer can fill with hot but not cold, or the reverse, when one solenoid dies. The valve lives at the rear of the machine where the fill hoses connect, and in Sacramento's hard water, calcium building on the solenoid seats speeds its wear by keeping them from sealing fully.

Step-by-Step Instructions#
Step 1 — Shut off water and disconnect the hoses#
Close both hot and cold supply valves at the wall, unplug the washer, and pull it forward for rear access. Set a bucket behind the machine and disconnect both fill hoses from the valve inlets by hand or with pliers, letting the water drain into the bucket. Note which hose is hot (left) and which is cold (right).
Step 2 — Open the panel#
On a front-load WFW, remove the 3 Phillips screws at the rear edge of the top panel, slide it back about an inch, and lift it off — the valve is at the upper-rear. On a top-load WTW, remove the 2 Phillips screws at the rear of the control console and tilt it forward on its hinges to reach the valve at the rear top of the cabinet.
Step 3 — Meter the valve (optional but wise)#
Before replacing, confirm the valve is faulty. Set your multimeter to ohms, disconnect the wire connectors from both solenoid coils, and read across each coil's terminals: 500-1,500 ohms is normal, OL/infinity means a burned-out (open) coil, and below 200 ohms means a shorted coil — either failure means replace the valve. If both coils read normal but the washer still will not fill, check water pressure (minimum 20 PSI) and the inlet screens for debris before condemning the valve.
Step 4 — Disconnect the wiring and internal hoses#
Photograph all wire connections first. Each solenoid has a 2-pin connector — press the locking tab and pull straight out by the housing. Then release the internal fill hoses from the valve outlets: squeeze the spring clamps back with needle-nose pliers and pull each hose off its nipple, towels ready for the residual water.
Step 5 — Remove the old valve#
The valve is held by 2 mounting screws (Phillips or Torx T20 depending on model year). Remove them and slide the valve out through the rear, noting its orientation — the hot and cold inlets are not interchangeable.
Step 6 — Install the new valve#
Set the new valve in the same orientation and secure it with the 2 screws, snug but not overtightened, since the plastic body can crack. Reconnect the internal fill hoses to their correct outlets and slide the spring clamps back over the nipples, then reconnect the wire harness to each solenoid coil until it clicks.
Step 7 — Reconnect and test#
Reattach the external fill hoses to the valve inlets — hot on the left, cold on the right — hand-tight plus a quarter turn with pliers, no more. Open both supply valves and check every connection for leaks, then reassemble the top panel or console, plug in, and run a Normal cycle. Confirm the machine fills with both hot and cold and does not leak.
Whirlpool-Specific Diagnostics#
Whirlpool washers use F#E# error codes, and the inlet-valve-related ones are F8E1 (low water flow detected — a valve or supply issue), F8E2 (excess water in the tub — a valve stuck open), and F0E5 (unbalanced load, which can mask a slow-fill valve). Enter diagnostic mode by pressing any 3 buttons in the sequence 1-2-3, 1-2-3 within 8 seconds; the diagnostic cycle tests each component, including the inlet valve.

What Are the Common Mistakes to Avoid?#
- Swapping hot and cold: the valve has designated ports, and reversing them gives you hot water on cold cycles and vice versa.
- Forgetting the inlet screens: each inlet has a small mesh screen, and if the old valve was slow-filling, the screens may be clogged. The new valve ships with clean screens, but also check and clean the hose-end screens.
- Overtightening the fill hoses: this cracks the plastic valve-port threads. Hand-tight plus a quarter turn is the maximum.
