How to Replace a Whirlpool Oven Selector Switch

What the selector switch controls#

The selector switch sends power to the right element for the mode you choose — bake to the bottom element, broil to the top, convection to the rear element, and both at high heat for self-clean. When one set of contacts fails, that mode dies while the others keep working. That single-mode symptom is the giveaway that separates a switch fault from a burnt element or a control-board problem.

Confirm the switch, not the element#

First rule out the element: with the 240V breaker off, meter the element for the dead mode — roughly 20-50 ohms is healthy, while an open reading means the element itself is finished. A good element paired with no heat in that mode points squarely at the selector switch contacts. It also helps to enter the range diagnostics and note any stored F-codes before you start.

Reach and replace the switch#

1. Switch off the 240V breaker and verify it is dead.
2. Remove the rear cover of the front control panel, or take out the panel screws and flip it forward, to expose the switch.
3. Photograph every wire on the switch — the harness is dense and mis-wiring energizes the wrong element.
4. Release each connector by its tab, then free the switch from the panel (a retaining nut on the shaft or a couple of Torx T20 screws).
5. Fit the new switch, return each wire to its matching terminal per your photos, and seat every connector firmly.

Test each mode#

Refit the panel and restore power. Run bake, broil, and convection in turn and confirm the correct element heats for each — the bottom for bake, the top for broil, the rear for convection. Do not jumper the switch contacts to force a test; that energizes elements without the normal interlocks. If a mode is still dead with a known-good switch and element, the fault is in the wiring back to the board, which is a technician's call.
