The bake element is the flat, calrod-style loop lying across the floor of the oven cavity. It carries the entire bottom-heat load for baking and roasting, and because it glows above 400°F for hours at a time, the resistance wire sealed inside its steel sheath eventually fatigues and opens. That failure is one of the most common Whirlpool oven complaints: the oven acts alive — the display lights, the fan may run — but no heat rises from the floor.
Whirlpool builds this element the same way across its freestanding electric ranges (the WFE line — WFE515, WFE525, WFE535, WFE540, WFE745) and its slide-in WEE models. In every case the element mounts to the back wall of the cavity with two screws and feeds through that wall to a pair of push-on terminals. Because the geometry is shared, the replacement steps below apply to all of them — only the element part number changes with the model.

How Do You Confirm the Bake Element Has Failed?#
A dead element usually announces itself in one of four ways. Most often you get no heat in bake mode: the oven shows its setpoint and seems to run, yet the bottom stays cold while the top broil element still works. Sometimes the failure is visible — a blister, split, or burned-through gap in the sheath, occasionally preceded by a bright arc flash as the element let go. A partial break shows up as uneven heating, where one stretch of the loop glows and another stays dark. And a shorted element can trip the kitchen's 240V breaker, especially the instant you select bake but never when you select broil.
Confirm it with a meter before ordering. With power off and the element removed (steps below), read resistance across the two terminals. A healthy bake element measures roughly 20-50 ohms depending on wattage. An open reading — OL or infinity — proves the element has burned out. A reading under about 5 ohms, or any continuity between a terminal and the element body, points to an internal short or ground fault and also means replacement. If you are unsure how to read the meter, trust the open result over anything else: a burned-out bake element is by far the most common finding when the oven bakes cold but the broiler still works, and the meter simply confirms what the cold oven has already told you.
Step-by-Step Replacement#
Step 1 — Kill the power#
Slide the range far enough from the wall to reach the cord and unplug it from the 240V outlet. If the outlet hides behind the range, switch off the double breaker feeding the circuit at the panel instead. Verify the kill: the display should be dark and the interior lamp should stay off. This step is not optional — the element terminals sit at 240V potential whenever the range is plugged in, because the oven control only interrupts one leg of the circuit.
Step 2 — Clear the cavity#
Pull every rack out so nothing blocks the element on the oven floor. On models fitted with SatinGlide roller racks, lift the rack off its rear roller guides first, then draw it forward and out.
Step 3 — Free the mounting screws#
Two screws anchor the element to the rear wall, usually 1/4" hex heads, sometimes tucked behind the element's rear bracket. Back both out and set them aside. The element is now loose and will swing forward off the wall.
Step 4 — Pull it forward and unplug the wires#
Draw the element gently into the cavity. As it comes forward the terminals slide back through their holes in the rear wall and the two spade connectors appear. Photograph the connections first — the wires are interchangeable on most bake elements, but the photo is a free insurance policy for reassembly. Grip each connector body, never the wire, and pull it straight off; a stubborn one yields to needle-nose pliers with a gentle rock. Yanking the wire risks tearing the connection back inside the wall.
Step 5 — Inspect the connectors#
Look hard at the spade terminals on the oven wires. If they are blued or blackened from heat, splayed open, or corroded, crimp on fresh high-temperature spade connectors rated for oven service. Ordinary automotive connectors are not built for that heat and will fail early. The two-minute crimp keeps the new element from arcing at a tired connection.
Step 6 — Fit the new element#
Push each connector firmly onto the new element's terminals until it seats snugly, then tug lightly to confirm it will not slip off. Feed the terminals back through the wall holes, lay the element flat on the oven floor (or onto its support brackets if your model uses them), line up the mounting holes, and reinstall the two screws. Snug is enough — overtightening bends the bracket.
Step 7 — Restore power and test#
Push the range home, plug it in or reset the breaker, and set the oven to BAKE at 350°F. The new element should begin glowing across its whole length within 3-5 minutes, evenly, with no dark stretch and no sparking at the terminals. A healthy oven reaches 350°F in about 10-15 minutes. If only one side lights or nothing happens, power down and recheck the connectors.
Step 8 — Reload racks and check the calibration#
Slide the racks back in. Ovens with AccuBake temperature management should hold the setpoint closely; verify it by leaving an oven thermometer on the center of the middle rack and confirming it lands within about 10°F of the setting after 30 minutes. A large miss points to the oven temperature sensor rather than the element, and that is calibrated through the control settings on electronic models.

Whirlpool-Specific Notes#
A few brand quirks are worth knowing. AquaLift self-clean models run a low-temperature, water-based cleaning cycle rather than a high-heat pyrolytic one; the bake element and its replacement are identical. True Convection ranges add a third element with a fan behind the rear wall, but the floor bake element is still present and replaced the same way — if the oven heats in convection but not standard bake, the bake element is your culprit. Do not confuse the cooktop's FlexHeat dual-radiant burners with oven elements; those live under the glass and are not user-serviceable. The Frozen Bake feature only changes how the control cycles the element for frozen food, so if Frozen Bake misbehaves while normal bake works, look at the control board, not the element. Finally, Whirlpool shows faults as F#E# codes: F3E1 flags an oven temperature sensor fault, while F1E1 or F1E0 point at the control board. If a code shows alongside the no-heat symptom, clear the code's cause first — the element may be innocent.
Troubleshooting After the Swap#
If the oven still will not heat with a known-good new element, suspect the thermal fuse — a one-shot safety device in the wiring path behind the rear panel that opens if the oven ever overheated; test it for continuity. If the fresh element glows and then trips the breaker, a wire is likely touching the metal wall at the terminal pass-through; reroute the wires clear of bare metal. If the oven heats but runs the wrong temperature, the sensor probe in the upper rear of the cavity has probably drifted; enter Whirlpool diagnostic mode with the tech-sheet button sequence and confirm it reads about 1080-1100 ohms at room temperature. And if the new element smokes on its first heat, that is just manufacturing oil burning off — it clears in 15-20 minutes, so ventilate and carry on.
