When a Whirlpool refrigerator keeps ice cream rock-hard in the freezer yet lets the top box climb toward room temperature, the evaporator fan motor is the part that usually gave out. That single motor blows chilled air off the evaporator coil and shares it between both compartments, so once its bearing binds or a winding opens, the freezer still cools by conduction but the fresh-food side never gets its share of moving air. A buzzing or chirping noise from the back of the freezer, or a fan that dies the instant you depress the door light switch by hand, both aim you at the same motor.

The procedure, step by step#
- Prepare and gather information. Pull the plug, empty the freezer, and find the model number on the rating plate inside the fresh-food section. Locate the tech sheet behind the base grille; it carries the wiring diagram and the diagnostic entry sequence for your exact cabinet.
- Enter diagnostic mode and read the stored codes. Use the three-button sequence from the tech sheet and note anything logged. Whirlpool groups faults as F#E# families, and the fan family lives under F4; seeing F4-series entries alongside a warm upper box supports the fan-motor diagnosis rather than a stuck damper.
- Reach the fan. Lift out the freezer shelves and back the rear evaporator panel off — typically six to eight Torx T20 screws. The fan motor sits in a shroud directly on the coil.
- Free the old motor. Photograph the harness first, then release each connector by its locking tab rather than tugging wires. Unclip the fan blade and unbolt the motor from its bracket.
- Bench-test to be sure. Put your meter across the motor terminals. An open reading (infinite resistance) confirms a burned winding; a motor that spins rough by hand but reads in-range points at a dry bearing. Either way it is replaced, but the test rules out a control-board or wiring fault upstream.
- Fit the replacement. Mount the new motor in the same orientation, transfer the blade, and seat every connector until it clicks. Do not overtighten the plastic shroud tabs.
- Reassemble and clear codes. Rebuild the panel and shelves, restore power, re-enter diagnostics, and clear the stored fault so a stale F4 entry does not confuse the next check.
- Monitor for a day or two. Watch that the fresh-food side settles back toward 37°F and the freezer holds near 0°F within 24 hours, and listen for the fan cycling smoothly with the door closed.
