Maytag bake elements cross-reference straight to Whirlpool W10-prefix parts — a common one is W10276482 — with shared mounting, connector and wattage across the platform. On models with Power Preheat, this element has to work alongside the broil element and convection fan, so a dead bake element silently disables that rapid-heat feature.

Replacing the Bake Element#
- Confirm the failure: set BAKE to 350°F and watch the lower element for a minute; no glow, dark sections, blistering or a burn-through hole all point to it. For certainty, pull it and meter across the terminals — 20-50 ohms is healthy, an open reading confirms failure.
- Cut power, then remove the heavy Maytag racks with a firm straight pull, and clear anything off the oven floor.
- Back out the two (sometimes three) Phillips or 1/4" hex mounting screws and draw the element forward two to three inches — just enough slack to reach the connectors.
- Pull each spade connector straight off; the terminals are interchangeable, since the element is a plain resistance wire with no polarity.
- Push the wires onto the new element, feed the terminals back through the wall, and set the element in its factory-formed shape — do not bend it to fit.
- Align and secure the mounting screws, and confirm the element sits about 1-1.5 inches above the floor without touching any surface or pinching the wiring.
- Refit the racks, restore power, and set BAKE 350°F — expect an even glow within 30-60 seconds, then check that Power Preheat now fires all elements together and reaches 350°F in about 7-10 minutes.
Troubleshooting#
- New element will not glow: reseat the connectors; if they are solid, suspect the control-board relay, thermal fuse or selector switch rather than the fresh element.
- Oven overshoots at first: the board compensated for the old weak element and needs a few cycles to recalibrate, settling within 3-5 bakes.
- Power Preheat still dead: it needs the broil element and fan too, so test those if only the bake element was replaced.
- Acrid smell that lingers: more than the normal one-to-two-cycle oil burn-off means a wire is touching the hot element — cut power and check.
