Before you start#
- Tools: Phillips #2 screwdriver, 1/4-inch nut driver, needle-nose pliers, a multimeter, wire strippers if the wire ends are damaged.
- Part: burner receptacle / terminal block (WP330031 or the model-specific equivalent).
- Safety: Switch OFF the range's breaker before starting — this is 240V wiring, lethal if worked live — and verify the receptacle is dead with a multimeter before touching any wire.
Step by step#
- Confirm the receptacle is the fault. The tells are intermittent operation, visible sparking or arcing where the element seats, burn marks or melted plastic on the receptacle, a burning smell when the burner is on, or one dead burner with the switch on. Pull the drip pan and look down at the receptacle — darkening, melting, or pitted contacts confirm it.
- Kill power and lift the cooktop. Turn off the 240V breaker and verify dead at the receptacle. On most Maytag coil-tops the surface lifts: release the two front support clips (slide a flat screwdriver in and push rearward while raising the front) or remove the screws some models use, then prop the cooktop on its support rod for full access underneath.
- Document and disconnect the wires. Two wires land on each receptacle — both carry 120V legs of the 240V circuit, with no neutral in a straight element circuit. Note the colors and positions, then pull each spade connector straight off with pliers (rock gently if arc-fused), never by the wire.
- Remove the old receptacle. Take out the mounting screw or compress the snap-ring ears and push the receptacle up through the opening. Inspect the opening for heat damage — an elongated or charred hole may need a reinforcement mounting plate.
- Prep the wire ends. Arcing heat travels up the wire, so if the insulation is blackened or brittle, strip back to bright copper (about 3/8 inch of bare wire for a good spade contact). If the insulation has retreated more than an inch, splice with high-temperature wire rated for 450 degrees F and ceramic wire nuts — never standard tape or plastic nuts in this heat; conductors here should be at least 12 AWG for a 240-volt element.
- Fit the new receptacle. Mount it flush and stable, then push each spade connector fully onto its terminal with no gap and no bare copper showing, and tug to confirm it is secure. The receptacle must sit square to the cooktop hole so the element prongs enter straight.
- Reassemble and test. Lower the cooktop and refit the clips or screws, seat the drip pan, and push the element in level. Restore power, set the burner to medium for 60 seconds and watch for even glow with zero sparking or smell, then run it on high to confirm smooth operation.

If it still misbehaves#
- New receptacle sparks on first use: the element prongs are pitted from the old burn — sand them lightly with 220-grit, or replace the element if the prongs are badly eroded.
- Works on low, cuts out on high: the connectors are not fully seated, so high current heats the marginal joint and trips protection — reseat firmly and confirm at least 12 AWG conductors.
- Receptacles keep burning out fast: the element likely has a partial internal short drawing excess current — a good 8-inch element reads about 25-45 ohms, and much lower means replace it.
- Opening too damaged to mount securely: add a reinforcement mounting plate that spans the damage and gives fresh screw holes.
