How to Replace an LG Top-Load Washing Machine Lid
Replacing the lid switch on an LG top-load washer (WT series) is a beginner, 15-25 minute job. When the switch fails the machine fills but will not agitate or spin — a dE code on digital models, or just silence on older ones — so you lift the top panel, swap the switch, and confirm the drum stops when the lid opens.
The lid switch sits under the top panel near the front, where the lid meets the housing. It is a magnetic reed switch or mechanical microswitch tripped by a magnet or strike in the lid, and it is the interlock that keeps the drum from spinning with the lid up.

Step-by-step#
1. Open up the switch area#
Unplug the machine. LG top panels are held either by rear-corner screws under plastic caps or by front-edge spring clips; remove the screws or release the clips with a putty knife in the seam, then pivot the panel up on its rear hinge to expose the switch.
2. Locate the switch#
It sits near the front-center of the opening where the lid strike — a plastic tab or magnet on the lid — meets it when closed, wired back to the control board along the top frame.
3. Disconnect and remove it#
Press the tab and unplug the harness, then remove the two or three screws holding the switch bracket to the frame and lift the switch out. Release any wire-retainer clip along the frame first to give yourself slack.
4. Fit the new switch#
Mount the new switch in the same spot, route the harness along the original path into its clips, and connect it until it clicks fully home.
5. Check the alignment#
Before you close up, lower the lid slowly and watch the strike meet the switch squarely — a warped lid or a sagged hinge that lands off-center will stop the switch triggering reliably.
6. Test it#
Close the panel, refit the screws or clips, plug in, close the lid, and start a Normal cycle. Confirm the machine fills and then agitates, and that it moves on to spin. Open the lid mid-cycle and the drum should stop within a second or two — that confirms the safety function.
7. TurboDrum check#
LG TurboDrum machines turn the inner drum and the pulsator independently, and the lid switch governs both. After the swap, open the lid during the wash phase and again during spin, and confirm neither the pulsator nor the drum keeps turning.
Troubleshooting#
- Still will not spin: confirm the harness connector is fully seated, and check the lid strike is not worn or broken.
- Switch clicks but a dE shows: the mechanism moves but the contacts are not making — meter continuity, which should appear only when the strike is engaged.
- Intermittent operation: the lid may not close fully from a bent hinge or warp — adjust or replace it.
