KitchenAid shares the Whirlpool infinite-switch platform, so switches are standardised by amperage and mounting. Each sits behind the backsplash, one per element, on simple push-on terminals — no soldering needed.
Before You Start#
- Tools: a Phillips #2, a Torx T20, a 1/4" nut driver, needle-nose pliers, masking tape and a marker, and your phone for wiring photos.
- Part: an infinite switch matched to your burner's amperage (typically 15A or 13A), with the same D-shaft diameter and mounting pattern.
- Time and level: 25-40 minutes per switch, intermediate.
- Safety: cut the breaker — the switch carries 240V on its terminals when the range is live. Confirm it is dead before touching any wiring.

Replacing the Infinite Switch#
- First confirm it is the switch, not the element: a burner stuck on HIGH means welded contacts (kill the breaker now), while no heat at any setting can be the switch, element or receptacle — swap in a known-good element to tell them apart.
- Pull the knobs off their D-shafts and remove the two to four screws holding the backsplash, then rotate it forward and lift it away to expose the row of switches.
- Label each wire to its terminal — usually L1 for line in, H for element high, L2 for return and P for the pilot lamp — and photograph the connections. Crossing L1 and H creates a permanent full-power feed.
- Grip each spade connector, not the wire, and pull it straight off; then remove the two mounting screws and lift the switch out.
- Match the old and new switches for shaft, terminals and hole spacing, mount the replacement, and push each wire firmly onto its terminal until it clicks — a loose spade arcs under 240V.
- Refit the backsplash, press the knob on with its D-flat aligned to OFF, restore power, and test the burner at every setting.
How They Fail#
An infinite switch does not lower voltage — it pulses full power on and off. At LOW the element is on about 15% of the time and off 85%, with a bimetal strip inside making and breaking the circuit. After roughly 50,000-100,000 of those cycles the contacts either weld shut (stuck on HIGH, the dangerous one), erode open (no heat), or wear partially (heat at some settings only).

Troubleshooting#
- Indicator light stays on with the burner off: the P terminal wire is crossed with L1 — swap and retest.
- Crisp clicking at medium on a new switch: normal; fresh bimetal contacts snap harder and quiet down over the first two to three weeks.
- Knob markings do not line up: the D-shaft is half a turn out — pull the knob and reseat it to OFF.
