How to Replace a KitchenAid Electric Dryer

Before you start#
- Tools: 1/4-inch hex nut driver, Phillips #2 screwdriver, a digital multimeter, needle-nose pliers.
- Part: heating element assembly (279838 or the model-specific equivalent).
- Safety: Unplug the dryer and confirm with the meter that no voltage is present at the element terminals before touching them. The canister holds heat — give it 30 minutes to cool.
Step by step#
- Reach the element from the rear. Pull the dryer from the wall and remove the 8-12 perimeter screws (usually 1/4-inch hex) holding the rear panel, then lift it off. The element canister sits on the right side of the rear bulkhead as you face the back.
- Test it before you pull it. On the resistance range, disconnect one wire and read across the terminals — a good element reads about 8-20 ohms depending on wattage. An open (infinite or OL) reading confirms a broken coil, and a near-zero reading means it has shorted to the housing; either way it is replaced.
- Remove the old element. Pull the two spade terminals off with the pliers (note which color goes where), take out the one or two screws holding the canister to the bulkhead, and slide the canister out through the opening.
- Fit the new element. Slide the new canister in, making sure the coil floats free on its ceramic insulators and does not touch the canister walls, then secure the screws and reconnect the wires — polarity does not matter on a resistive element.
- Check the ProDry element if fitted. ProDry models have a second, smaller element on the rear bulkhead facing into the drum; test it the same way. If both elements are open at once, look upstream at the cycling and high-limit thermostats as the real cause.
- Reassemble and test. Refit the rear panel with all its screws, run a High Heat timed cycle, and feel the exterior vent within 2-3 minutes — it should be hot. No heat means recheck the wiring; a glowing element that trips the high-limit fast means a restricted exhaust vent to clean.

Test the parts that killed it#
An element rarely dies alone — whatever overheated it will cook the new one too. Before you finish, meter these:
- Thermal fuse — should show continuity; an open one blew from overheating, which means a restricted vent.
- High-limit thermostat — should show continuity at room temperature.
- Cycling thermostat — should show continuity at room temperature.
- Exhaust vent — must be clear end to end, since a blocked vent is what overheats and burns out elements.
How the element works and why it fails#
The heating element is simply a long coil of resistance wire strung on ceramic insulators inside a metal canister; current flowing through it makes it glow, and the blower pushes air across it into the drum. Two things end its life. The first is ordinary age — thousands of heat-and-cool cycles make the wire brittle until it finally cracks and opens the circuit, which is why an element that has run for years fails with no other cause. The second, and the one that matters for the new part, is overheating from restricted airflow: a clogged lint filter, a packed vent, or a blocked blower makes the element run far hotter than designed and burns it out early. That is why the closing step of this job is testing the thermostats and clearing the vent — replace the element without fixing the airflow and the fresh coil will fail the same way.
