How to Replace a GE Stove Door Gasket
Diagnosing a GE range that heats poorly is an intermediate, 30-45 minute job of elimination. You identify gas versus electric, then test the likely culprit — a weak burner igniter, a burnt-out bake element, a stalled convection fan, or a drifted temperature sensor — and check the oven door gasket if heat is escaping.
GE ranges are built around specific heating architectures, so pinning down which one you have narrows the fault fast. Gas models use individual sealed burners with one igniter each; electric ovens use separate bake and broil elements, and Profile and Cafe models add a ring-shaped True European Convection element around the rear fan for even heat.

Step-by-step#
1. Identify the type and the symptom#
Note whether the range is gas or electric, which area heats unevenly, and whether the oven reaches temperature at all. One gas burner that will not light while others do points to that burner's igniter; an electric oven that burns the top and leaves the bottom raw points to the bake element; poor results only in convection mode point to the fan.
2. Test gas burner igniters#
Turn on the problem burner and watch the igniter — it should glow bright orange or white within about 40 seconds and light the gas. A weak, dim glow lasting more than 60 seconds without ignition means it has degraded. GE's safety valve only opens when the igniter draws enough current (3.2-3.6 amps), so a weak igniter never opens it. Each sealed burner has its own igniter (part WB13K21 on most models); lead lengths differ, so they are not universal across positions.
3. Inspect the bake element#
Pull the racks, set bake to 350 degrees F, and watch the floor element: a good one glows uniformly red-orange along its length within two to three minutes. Dark sections, uneven brightness, or blistering mean it has failed — switch off and unplug at once. The GE bake element (WB44T10011) is held by two rear-wall screws and a connector behind.
4. Test the convection fan#
Set Convection Bake or True European Convection, and after the preheat tone open the door briefly to check the rear fan is spinning. A stalled fan means the motor (WB26X10210) has failed. Note that True European Convection heats air with the ring element around the fan, so if the ring fails but the fan spins you get circulation without the even-heat benefit.
5. Test the oven temperature sensor#
If the oven overshoots or undershoots, the temperature sensor (WB21X5301) — an RTD probe on the rear interior wall — may be off. Cold, it should read about 1080-1090 ohms at 70 degrees F; readings well outside that mean failure. Two screws from inside the oven release it, no rear panel needed.
6. Check Air Fry and the meat probe#
GE's Air Fry mode just runs the same fan faster, so uneven Air Fry results with normal bake fine can mean a fan bearing failing at speed — and dark pans, rather than the air-fry basket, also cause uneven browning. On Profile and Cafe models, inspect the precision cooking probe for a frayed wire or bent tip, which feeds the controller a false reading.
Troubleshooting#
- Slow preheat: both bake and broil run during preheat, so test the broil element too.
- Gas igniter clicks nonstop but will not light: the spark module works but gas is not arriving — check the supply valve behind the stove.
- Uneven browning on one side: the oven door gasket may have failed on that side and be leaking heat — run the dollar-bill test around the door perimeter.
- SmartHQ shows F3 or F4: a temperature-sensor circuit fault. Replace the sensor before the far more expensive control board.
