How to Replace Bosch Dryer Moisture Sensors

The AutoDry system reads dryness by measuring the electrical resistance across two metal bars inside the drum: damp clothes tumbling over the bars bridge the circuit, and as the load dries the resistance climbs until the machine ends the cycle. A residue film — mostly from liquid fabric softener — insulates the bars so they read dry too soon and stop with clothes still damp, or miss the low-moisture point and run on too long. Cleaning restores the contact surface; actual replacement is the fallback for bars that are physically damaged or corroded through.

Before you start#

Safety warning: Unplug the dryer before cleaning or replacing sensors. The sensors carry low voltage during operation but the machine should be off for any work inside the drum.

Step-by-step#

1. Clean the sensor bars first#

Find the two metal strips near the front of the drum opening, just inside the door frame. Draw 400-grit sandpaper along each bar with five or six gentle strokes, wipe with a cloth dampened in white vinegar, and dry fully. Run a test load on AutoDry — if it now stops when the clothes are dry, the bars were only dirty and you are done.

2. If cleaning fails, test the bars#

With the dryer unplugged, meter continuity between each bar and its wiring connector (reached from the front panel or behind the drum-front seal). You should read near-zero ohms; an open circuit means a broken connection at the mount or a broken wire.

3. Replace the sensor bars#

Access depends on the model, but the bars are usually riveted or screwed into the drum-front flange, reached by removing the front panel — with the top off, take the screws at the top of the front panel, disconnect the door-switch harness, and lift the panel off its hooks. Take out the mounting hardware, disconnect the wiring, and pull the old bars. Set the new bars in the same orientation, reconnect the wiring firmly so the connector cannot arc, and secure the mounts before refitting the panel.

4. Calibrate afterward#

Run one full Timed Dry cycle (which bypasses the sensors) to confirm heat, then switch to AutoDry with a small damp load. The system relearns over three to five cycles; if it still stops early or late, open the Service menu and run Sensor Calibration.

Troubleshooting#

• AutoDry stops too early with damp clothes: the bars are reading dry, almost always from mineral or softener film — clean with 400-grit.
• AutoDry runs too long: the bars are not sensing low moisture, from either residue or a corroded, high-resistance connector.
• E32 error: a sensor-circuit fault. Check continuity from the bars to the control-board connector for a broken wire or corroded joint.
• Trouble returns soon after a softener change: the film builds fastest with liquid softener, so switch to dryer sheets or dose less, and clean the bars monthly.
