How to Repair a GE Stove Convection Fan Motor

Match the repair to the heating system#

A GE range is built around a specific heating architecture, so diagnosis starts with knowing yours. Gas models use one igniter per sealed burner. Electric ovens use separate bake (bottom) and broil (top) elements, and Profile and Cafe models add a True European Convection element — a ring around the rear fan that heats the air as the fan circulates it. Standard convection only moves existing heat; the ring is what makes it even. That distinction tells you whether a symptom is a fan problem, an element problem, or a sensor problem.

Tools and safety#

• Tools: Phillips #2 screwdriver, 1/4-inch hex driver, a nut driver set (1/4-inch and 5/16-inch), an igniter wrench, and a multimeter
• Safety: Turn off the breaker on electric models. On gas, close the supply valve behind the range and confirm with a soapy-water bubble test.

Diagnose in order#

1. Pin down type and symptom#

Ask three questions: gas or electric; which area heats unevenly; and does the oven fail to reach temperature or just cook unevenly? Uneven results only in convection mode point straight at the fan motor.

2. Gas igniter (gas models)#

Light the problem burner and watch its igniter — it should glow bright within about 40 seconds and light the gas. A weak, dim glow lasting past 60 seconds means it has degraded: GE's safety valve only opens when the igniter draws enough current (3.2-3.6 amps), so a weak igniter starves the burner. Each sealed burner has its own igniter (WB13K21 on most models).

3. Bake element (electric models)#

Set bake to 350°F and watch the floor element. A good one glows uniform red-orange along its whole length within 2-3 minutes. Dark spots, uneven brightness, or blistering mean it has failed — shut off and unplug. The bake element (WB44T10011) is held by two rear-wall screws and a connector behind.

4. Convection fan motor#

Set the oven to Convection Bake or True European Convection. After the preheat tone, open the door briefly and look at the rear wall: the fan should be spinning behind its cover. If it is dead, the motor (WB26X10210) has failed. If the fan turns but heat is still uneven, suspect the ring element rather than the motor.

5. Temperature sensor#

If the oven overshoots, undershoots, or bakes unevenly across modes, test the sensor (WB21X5301) — an RTD probe on the rear interior wall. Cold at room temperature it should read about 1080-1090 ohms at 70°F; readings well off that mean the sensor is out of spec. Two screws from inside the cavity release it, no rear panel needed.

6. Air Fry and the fan#

GE Air Fry mode just runs the same convection fan faster — no extra hardware. If Air Fry cooks unevenly while normal bake is fine, the motor may be failing at high speed (a bearing issue). Also confirm you are using the air fry basket or a light pan, not a dark one.

Troubleshooting notes#

• Slow preheat: both bake and broil elements run during preheat, so a slow preheat can be a bad broil element too.
• Igniter clicks but no flame: clicking without a glow means spark is present but gas is not — check the supply valve behind the range.
• Browning heavy on one side: a failed door gasket on one side lets heat escape; run the dollar-bill test around the door.
• SmartHQ shows F3 or F4: a temperature-sensor circuit fault — replace the sensor before the pricier control board.

When to call a professional#

Stop and call a technician if you smell gas with the burner off (ventilate, do not flip switches, leave if strong), if a burnt-through element is sparking inside the cavity, if control-board codes will not clear after a one-minute power reset, or if the gas safety valve needs replacing.
