Whirlpool Washer: Which of the Five Faults?
Five faults account for most Whirlpool washer calls, and each has a decisive test. Whirlpool reports them as F# E#, where the first digit is the function group and the second the specific fault, and the same scheme runs across Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana. If you arrived here without a code, start with the table below rather than the first section. Each of the five faults has a symptom that belongs to it alone and a test that settles it, and picking the right one first is worth more than any of the individual procedures.

F5 E2 — the door lock#
The most common code on WFW front-load machines. It means the control never got confirmation that the lock engaged or released. Push the door shut: if it bounces back, look at the strike for damage or debris. Otherwise pull the front lower panel, find the lock assembly at the right of the door opening and unplug its harness. Across the solenoid terminals you want 50-200 ohms; an infinite reading is an open solenoid. With the door latched by hand, the switch contacts should show continuity.
The replacement (W10838613) comes out through the front opening after the bellow outer band is off and 2 Torx T20 screws are removed. Then verify: hold the delay button 3 seconds, press and release power, and the machine attempts a lock test in the first 30 seconds of diagnostic mode.

Shaking on the spin#
Front-load and top-load fail differently. On a WFW, the shock absorbers (WPW10739670) damp the tub, and worn ones let it hit the cabinet. Push down firmly on the drum: more than one bounce before it settles means they are gone, and they are always replaced in pairs. Check the concrete counterweights too — loose bolts let the mass shift under spin. Torque them to 35 ft-lbs.
A WTW hangs its tub on 4 suspension rods. Push the tub down with the cabinet off; it should recentre within 1-2 bounces. Repeated oscillation means the whole set of 4 is replaced. Levelling matters more on these machines than most: adjust all 4 feet until a bubble level reads true both ways, then lock each jam nut.

Adaptive Wash filling wrong#
Water level is sensed through a thin air hose running from the bottom of the outer tub up to the pressure sensor. Kinked, split or fallen off, the machine is blind and will overfill, underfill or throw overflow-related codes. Trace the hose and blow gently into it: you should feel pressure build in a sealed system. Air moving freely means it is open somewhere.
Load & Go not dispensing#
The bulk detergent valve is solenoid-operated. Stuck closed, clothes come out unwashed; stuck open, the suds trigger F0 E5 suds lock. Pull the drawer assembly and flush the valve port with hot water to clear dried detergent. No click as the machine starts to fill after that means the solenoid is finished.

Odds and ends worth knowing#
F3 E1 and F3 E2 are pressure and water level codes, and the air hose is behind 60% of them. F7 E1 on a top-load is nearly always the shift actuator — 15 minutes once the cabinet is off. A dead control panel sometimes clears with a 10-minute unplug; if not, suspect the MCU W10756692 on WFW models. Brown marks on clean laundry mean mould hiding in the door bellow.
Grinding through the spin means tub bearings, and visible corrosion on the three-armed drum spider is the 8-12 year end of a WFW. Both are book a diagnostic territory, not a weekend job.## Start here: match the symptom to the fault

The two shaking rows are worth separating before ordering anything, because front-load and top-load machines fail differently and the parts are not the same. On both, the push-and-count test is the whole diagnosis, and on both the parts are replaced as a complete set rather than singly — a fresh damper working against three tired ones lasts about as long as the tired ones.
