How to Fix a Whirlpool Gas Stove Uneven Flame
A Whirlpool gas burner that burns yellow, weak, or lopsided almost always has clogged burner ports or a burner cap that is out of position — not a failed part. Cleaning the ports and reseating the cap restores an even blue flame in a few minutes with no tools beyond a pin. Worth a quick pass before the burners work…
Read the flame first#
A healthy gas flame is steady and blue all the way around the cap. Yellow or orange tips mean incomplete combustion, usually from blocked ports or spilled food; a flame that is tall on one side and low on the other means the cap is off-center or a run of ports is clogged. Sooty pans and a faint gas smell after boil-overs are the same story. None of this needs a replacement part — it needs cleaning and alignment.
Clean the burner ports#
- Turn every burner off and let the cooktop cool completely, then close the gas shutoff valve behind the range for safety.
- Lift off the grate, the burner cap, and the burner head — on Whirlpool cooktops these sit in place without screws.
- Clear each port (the small holes around the ring) with a straightened pin or paperclip, then brush away loosened debris; avoid a wooden toothpick that can snap off in a hole.
- Wash the cap and head in warm soapy water, and make sure the small igniter port is clear.
- Dry every part fully — a damp head keeps the igniter clicking and burns yellow.

Reseat and test#
Set the head back on its alignment posts, then drop the cap on so it sits flat and level with no wobble — a tilted cap is the single most common cause of a lopsided flame. Open the gas valve and light the burner: the flame should snap to an even blue ring. If it is still yellow, the head is not fully dry or a port is still blocked; if it is weak everywhere, check that the cap is seated rather than perched on debris.
When it is more than the burner#
If flames are fine but the oven misbehaves, Whirlpool's F-code diagnostics point at oven-side faults instead, and a Torx T20 covers most internal panels if you go deeper. But a strong gas smell with the burners off, or a burner that will not light at all after cleaning, is a job to hand to a technician rather than chase further.
