Bottom line: Uneven heating on a GE range traces to one of a few parts — a weak gas igniter, a failing bake element, a stalled convection fan, or a drifting temperature sensor. This is an intermediate 30-45 minute diagnosis; identify the symptom first, then test the matching component.
Turn off circuit breaker for electric models. For gas: turn off gas supply valve behind stove and verify with soapy water bubble test.

Step by step#
1. Pin down the type and symptom#
First settle three things: gas or electric, which area heats unevenly (cooktop, oven, or both), and whether the oven reaches temperature but cooks with hot spots or never gets there at all. One gas burner that will not light while others do points to that burner's igniter.
2. Test the gas igniters#
Turn on the problem burner and watch the igniter — it should glow bright orange-white within about 40 seconds before the gas lights. If it glows dim for over 60 seconds without ignition, it has degraded. GE safety valves only open when the igniter draws enough current (about 3.2-3.6 amps); a weak igniter draws less current and the valve never opens. If it clicks but never glows, the igniter is open or the wiring has failed.
3. Inspect the bake element#
On electric models, pull the racks and look at the flat bake element on the oven floor. Set bake to 350 degrees F: a healthy element glows uniformly red-orange end to end within 2-3 minutes. Dark sections, uneven brightness, or blistering mean it has failed. Turn off immediately and unplug if you see arcing.
4. Check the convection fan#
On Profile and Cafe models, set Convection Bake, then briefly open the door after preheat and look at the rear wall for the spinning fan behind its cover. A fan that does not turn points to a failed motor, WB26X10210. GE True European Convection adds a ring element around that fan, so a cold convection bake can be the element rather than the motor.
5. Test the temperature sensor#
If the oven overshoots, undershoots, or bakes unevenly, the sensor WB21X5301 may be out of calibration. It is an RTD probe on the rear interior wall; with the oven at room temperature you should read roughly 1080-1090 ohms. A reading far off that value means replace the sensor.
6. Check Air Fry mode#
GE ranges with Air Fry reuse the same convection fan at a higher speed, so there is no extra hardware to fail. If Air Fry cooks unevenly while normal bake is fine, the fan motor may be struggling at that higher speed from a worn bearing. Also confirm you are not using dark pans; GE recommends the included air fry basket or light-colored pans for even results.
7. Inspect the precision cooking probe#
On Profile and Cafe models the wired precision cooking probe drives meat-doneness readings, and a frayed wire or bent tip feeds the controller bad temperatures. Pull the probe from its wall socket and inspect it, then test it with a multimeter if you suspect it is off. A faulty probe can make an otherwise healthy oven behave as if it heats unevenly.
If it still bakes unevenly#
- Slow preheat: GE runs both bake and broil elements during preheat, so test the broil element too.
- Continuous clicking, no light: the spark module works but gas is not reaching the burner — check the supply valve behind the stove.
- One-sided browning: a failed door gasket lets heat escape asymmetrically; run a dollar-bill test around the door.
- F3 or F4 on the display: a temperature-sensor circuit fault; replace the sensor before the pricier control board.
