Check the gas first — it's free#
Hotpoint ranges are basic and dependable, and the most overlooked cause of a dead burner is the gas itself. Make sure the shutoff valve behind the range is fully open, that the flexible connector has no kink, and that another gas appliance in the house still works. If the range was recently moved for cleaning, a partly closed valve or a nudged connector is a very common reason every burner suddenly refuses to light.
Clean and dry the igniter#
Each burner lights from a ceramic igniter beside it, and on a well-used Hotpoint that igniter collects grease and boil-over crust. Take off the grate, cap, and head, and clean the gap around the igniter with a pin until it is clear. Water is the other everyday culprit — after a pot boils over, the igniter shorts out and clicks without lighting until it dries, so towel the area and give it a quarter hour before trying again.

Reseat the cap and read the clicks#
Set the burner cap back so it sits flat; a crooked cap pushes gas away from the spark and mimics a failed igniter. Then turn each burner and listen. If just one burner is silent while the others click, that igniter or its wire is the problem. If nothing clicks anywhere, the single spark module that serves the whole cooktop has failed and needs replacing.
Older Hotpoints and gas conversions#
If yours is an older Hotpoint or one that was converted between natural gas and propane, a burner can light poorly because the wrong orifice was left in place during the conversion. A burner that lights weakly, or not at all, on a converted range is worth checking against the gas type it is set for. Very old standing-pilot models are a different design entirely — there the pilot flame, not a spark, does the lighting.
