GE Washer E4: Overfill — Water Level Exceeded Safe Maximum Height
E4 means the water level sensor detected the tub exceeded the maximum safe fill height. The board immediately activates the drain pump and locks the fill valve. The door locks to prevent opening at high water level.
The Stuck Valve Problem
The most common E4 cause: the inlet valve's plunger mechanism failed to close. When the board de-energizes the solenoid, a spring should return the plunger to the seated (closed) position. Mineral deposits on the plunger prevent full seating — water continues flowing at a reduced rate. Eventually the overflow threshold is reached.

Immediate Response
- The machine should be draining automatically
- If NOT draining, shut off the water supply valves behind the machine NOW
- Check for floor water — use towels or wet-dry vacuum
- Wait for draining to complete before opening the door
Inlet Valve Diagnosis
- Unplug the washer
- Turn off water supply valves
- Access the valve (top panel removal on most front-loaders)
- Remove the valve and inspect the plunger seat for mineral deposits or debris
- Even if solenoid resistance tests normal (800-1500 ohms), a stuck plunger is a mechanical issue that electrical testing misses
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Pressure Switch Check
If the valve is fine, the pressure switch may have failed to detect rising water during normal fill. The tub filled past normal before the overflow sensor triggered. Blow gently into the pressure switch air tube — listen for a click. Check the tube for kinks or disconnections.

Prevention
Annual inlet screen cleaning prevents mineral deposits from migrating to the valve plunger. In hard water areas, a water softener significantly reduces valve sticking risk.
