GE Washer E2: Drain Pump Ran But Water Remains in the Tub

E2 on GE washers (manufactured by Haier since 2016 across standard GE, Profile, and Unitized lines) means the drain pump ran for its full timeout but the pressure switch still reads water present. The pump operated — you heard it — but water did not leave.

Front-Load vs Top-Load Drain Access

GE Front-Load: Access the drain filter through a small panel at the lower-front of the machine. Pull the emergency drain hose first to reduce water level, then unscrew the filter cap. Remove debris. Check pump impeller.

GE Top-Load: Most top-loads lack a user-accessible filter. The pump connects directly to the tub. Access requires tilting or removing the back panel.

Systematic Diagnosis

Step 1: Drain Filter (Front-Load Only)

Clean the filter — coins, buttons, hair ties, small socks, and tissue clumps are common. Check the impeller for free rotation. This resolves ~50% of E2 cases.

Step 2: Drain Hose

Check for kinks. Verify the standpipe connection is clear. GE allows up to 96-inch drain hose height — measure yours.

Step 3: Pump Motor

If filter is clean and hose is clear, test the pump. Unplug machine. Disconnect pump connector. Measure resistance: 5-15 ohms. OL = dead motor. Also check: does the impeller spin? If it spins freely with NO resistance, the impeller has separated from the motor shaft (motor spins but nothing moves water).
