What this GE vs Whirlpool comparison is based on#
The top of this table is a tie and the middle of it is a three-way disagreement. That combination is unusual enough to be the point of the page. The records are CPSC SaferProducts incident reports covering 2011 to 2026 for both brands: 181 naming a GE washer and 115 naming a Whirlpool one.
Both are collections of submissions. Someone filed each one, nobody files about a machine that works, and the CPSC publishes no count of washers sold or in service — so the shares below describe the reports and never the appliances behind them.
The leaders match#
The control board is the most-named component in both records, and the two shares are a point apart: 13% of the GE reports against 14% of the Whirlpool ones. Underneath, 23 filings against 16. The table marks the row as within one-report noise, which at these corpus sizes it comfortably is.
That agreement is the sturdiest thing here. Two independently collected sets of complaints, one about sixty per cent larger than the other, allocate almost exactly the same fraction of their contents to the same component.
The middle of the table splits three ways#
Below the leaders, three rows separate the brands by 4 points or more, and they do not all lean the same way.
The motor is named in 7% of the GE reports against 2% of the Whirlpool ones — 13 filings against 2, a 5-point gap and the widest on the page. The drain pump or hose runs the opposite way: 5% of the Whirlpool reports against 1% of the GE ones, 6 filings against 1. So does the wiring or power cord: 8% against 4%, 9 filings against 8.
Two of those three hold up in raw counts as well as in shares. The motor row has 13 GE documents against 2, and the drain pump row has 6 Whirlpool documents against 1. Two records with the same head and different shoulders#
GE names ten components and Whirlpool ten. Both peak on the board. What follows differs: GE's second and third places go to the motor at 7% and the lint trap or vent at 6%, while Whirlpool's go to the wiring or power cord at 8% and then the drain pump or hose and lint trap or vent tied at 5%.
Whirlpool's list is also the more top-heavy of the two. Its first two entries take 14% and 8% of that record, while GE's take 13% and 7% and then descend more gradually through a wider mid-band.
Corpus depth is doing some of that work. 181 documents descend more smoothly than 115 do, simply because there are more of them to place, so a gently sloping mid-band on the GE side and a steeper drop on the Whirlpool side is partly a statement about sample size. What is not a sample-size artifact is which component each record puts in second place, since both of those entries rest on filings in double or near-double figures.
What the page supports#
For a washer of either brand appearing in this database, the control board is the first thing the reports name, at about the same share on both sides. Past it, the two records give different second suspects: the motor for GE, on 13 filings, and the wiring or power cord for Whirlpool, on 9, with the drain pump or hose close behind on 6.
That is a modest, well-anchored finding. It says which components the complaints describe and it says nothing about how likely either washer is to need work, because no denominator exists to turn these counts into that kind of statement.
