What this GE vs Whirlpool comparison is based on#
Two federal complaint records are counted here: 265 CPSC SaferProducts incident reports naming a component on a GE refrigerator between 2011 and 2026, and 170 doing the same for a Whirlpool refrigerator over the same years. Each share belongs to its own column, and neither total counts refrigerators sold or in service.
Three gaps at the top, all in the same direction#
The compressor separates the two records by 17 points: 2% of the GE reports against 19% of the Whirlpool ones, five filings against 32. The ice maker separates them by 10 points, 24% against 34%, 64 filings against 58. The wiring or power cord separates them by 7 points, 2% against 9%, four filings against sixteen.
All three lean the same way, which is the pattern a difference in concentration produces rather than three independent findings. Whirlpool's top three rows are 106 filings out of 170 — close to two thirds of that record. GE's top three are 64, six and five out of 265, and the second and third of those are not really rows at all.
The agreements are where nobody names anything#
The more revealing half of this page is the set of rows that match. The control board sits at 2% on both sides, six GE filings against four Whirlpool ones. The condenser sits at 1% on both, the evaporator at 1% on both, the thermostat or sensor at 1% on both. Four rows marked as showing no measured difference, and every one of them is a handful of reports in each column.
That is not a coincidence. Two records agree most exactly on the components their complaints rarely mention, because a row of one to six filings has very little room to differ. Reading those four rows as evidence that the brands behave identically on those parts would be reading agreement out of an absence of data.
What separates a record that names parts from one that does not#

Both records contain complaints that describe a symptom and never identify a part — a refrigerator that warmed up, water on the floor, a compartment that iced over. Given that GE's record is the larger of the two and still names less, the second explanation is at least as plausible as the first. That is a claim about how the reports were written, not about how the appliances behave, and it is the honest ceiling for what this comparison supports.
The one row where both sides are solid#
The ice maker is the only comparison here with real counts on both sides — 64 GE filings against 58 Whirlpool ones. It leads both columns, and its 10-point gap is the one difference on this page that is not asymmetric in its evidence.
Even that gap has a simpler reading available. Whirlpool's record is smaller and more concentrated, so its leading row takes a larger share of it. The counts behind the two rows are within six filings of one another.
A test worth applying to any comparison like this#
There is a quick check that separates a real brand difference from a difference in how two records were written, and this page is a good place to demonstrate it: look at whether the gaps have a direction.
If one record simply names components more often than the other, then every row where either record has weight will lean the same way, and the rows where neither has weight will look identical. That is exactly the pattern here — three leaning gaps at the top, four flat rows underneath, and nothing leaning towards GE at all.
A genuine difference between two brands normally looks different. It leans one way on some components and the other way on others, because two appliances rarely differ uniformly across the compressor, the ice maker and the wiring at once. Several other pairings in this set do show that mixed pattern, and where they do, the individual rows carry more weight than they can here.
None of which proves the Whirlpool record is only better-worded.
