What this GE vs Samsung comparison is based on#
Two large sets of federal incident reports are counted here: 960 CPSC SaferProducts filings naming a component on a GE oven between 2011 and 2026, and 661 doing the same for a Samsung oven over the same window. Both records are substantial for this appliance, so their rows can be read against one another without the usual small-sample caveats.
Two records that disagree about where an oven's trouble sits#
The control board leads both columns, and by very different margins. Samsung's board row takes 13% of its reports — 87 filings — while GE's takes 6%, or 57 filings. That is 7 points, the widest gap on the page.
In the Samsung column the board is more than four times its second row. In the GE column it leads a tight cluster: 6%, then the igniter at 5%, then the heating element and the wiring or power cord at 4% each. GE's top four rows are 178 filings sitting inside a two-point band.
So one record has a dominant electronic component and the other has a spread across electronics, heat and wiring. That structural difference is the substance of this comparison, and it holds regardless of how any single row is read.
The igniter runs the other way#
The second real difference is the igniter: 5% of the GE reports, 44 filings, against 2% of the Samsung ones, ten filings. Three points, in GE's direction.
An igniter is a gas-oven part with no role in an electric oven, so the size of an igniter row is partly a function of how many gas models sit behind a record. It is flagged here rather than folded into a conclusion.
The wiring or power cord follows the same direction at 2 points, 4% against 2%, 35 filings against fifteen, and the heating element at a single point, 4% against 3%.
Where the two agree#
Two rows show no measured difference at all. The thermostat or sensor sits at 1% on both sides — nine GE filings and seven Samsung ones — and the motor at 0% on both, one report against three. Those are the rows the table marks as within one-report noise, and they should be read as agreement rather than as small gaps.
Samsung's column also carries an evaporator row at 0%, a single filing. An evaporator is refrigeration hardware; one report out of 661 landing there is the classification working from the words in a self-filed form, not an oven component. What the concentration difference is worth#
It is tempting to read Samsung's 13% as a statement about its control boards and stop there. The narrower reading is better supported: among Samsung oven complaints that named a part, the board was named far more often than anything else, and among GE's, naming spread across four components.
Both readings are compatible with the same underlying hardware behaving identically, because a complaint record measures what owners chose to report and how the report was worded. What it does not measure is how many ovens of either brand are in service — without which neither column can become a rate.
Reading the pair together#
For a technician the shortlist is the same on both brands, and the order differs only after the first entry: control board first either way, then the igniter, the heating element and the wiring on a GE, and a much flatter tail on a Samsung. The one row to treat with extra care is the igniter, because it may be describing the fuel mix behind each record.
