GE Refrigerator CI: Variable-Speed Compressor Inverter Communication Lost
CI indicates a data link failure between the main control board and the compressor inverter board. This code only appears on GE refrigerators with variable-speed compressors — Profile, Cafe, and Monogram models post-2016.
Variable-Speed Architecture
The main board sends cooling demand commands ('run at 60% speed'). The inverter board converts this to variable-frequency power for the compressor motor. CI means this data exchange stopped — the inverter is not responding.

Urgency Level
CI can prevent the compressor from running entirely, which means no cooling. Some models fall back to a fixed low-speed mode, but cooling capacity drops significantly. This is an urgent repair for food safety.
Diagnosis
- Unplug. Remove lower rear panel
- Find the inverter board (near the compressor)
- Check the wire harness connector between main board and inverter — disconnect and firmly reseat
- Inspect the inverter board for visual damage (burned components, swollen capacitors)
- Plug in and listen: does the compressor attempt to start?

Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Root Causes
- Corroded connector (most common): Humidity and vibration degrade the multi-pin connector between boards
- Failed inverter board: Power components (IGBTs/MOSFETs) handling high compressor current can fail
- Main board communication port: Less common — the main board's serial circuit rarely fails
Parts and Pricing
| Part | GE Number | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Inverter board | WR55X26038 or model-specific | $85-$175 |
| Wiring harness | Varies | $25-$50 |
| Main board | Varies | $150-$300 |
Professional repair: $275-$550. Connector reseat resolves many CI cases at no parts cost.
