Most Likely Cause#
A GE dryer that shuts off before the cycle finishes — leaving clothes damp — is usually reacting to a heat or airflow problem, or ending a sensor cycle too early. The most common cause is a restricted vent: when lint blocks the exhaust, the dryer overheats and a safety thermostat cuts the cycle short. Right behind it is a moisture sensor ending sensor-dry cycles prematurely, a heating element that has failed so the dryer never reaches "dry," and a tripped thermal fuse or a control-board fault that stops the run.
The first clue is whether the clothes come out hot-but-damp, cold-and-damp, or the dryer quits at a random early point. Hot and damp points at airflow and overheating; cold and damp points at no heat; an early stop on auto cycles points at the moisture sensor.

- Stops early, clothes hot and still damp: a blocked vent is overheating the dryer and tripping a thermostat.
- Runs then stops, clothes cold and damp: the heating element or a thermal fuse has failed — no heat, so it never dries.

Vent Restriction#
Because a blocked vent is the top cause, start there. Lint that builds up in the filter, the vent hose, or the wall duct chokes the airflow the dryer needs to carry heat and moisture away. Starved of airflow, the dryer overheats and a safety thermostat cuts the cycle short to protect it — so the clothes come out hot but still damp. Clean the lint filter every load and clear the entire vent run to the outside; a restricted vent is also a fire hazard, which makes this the most important check of all.
Sensor, Element, and Fuse#
If the vent is clear, sort by temperature. On auto cycles that end almost immediately with damp clothes, the moisture sensor — a pair of metal bars in the drum — may be misreading; wiping the bars clean and comparing against a timed cycle tells you whether the sensor is the problem. If the dryer runs full-length but the clothes are cold, there is no heat: the heating element has likely failed open, or a thermal fuse has blown, which also stops some models entirely. Both are tested for continuity with the power off.
Quick Diagnostic Sequence#
- Note whether the clothes are hot-damp, cold-damp, or the cycle ends very early.
- Clean the lint filter and clear the full vent run to the outside.
- Wipe the moisture sensor bars and compare a timed cycle to an auto cycle.
- With power off, test the heating element and thermal fuse for continuity.
- If nothing else fits, reset power and evaluate the control board.
Safety: unplug the dryer before testing the element, fuse, or sensor, and on gas models shut off the gas supply. A lint-blocked vent is a fire risk, so do not defer the vent cleaning.

A failed control board is the expensive verdict, and on an older GE dryer that is the point to weigh a repair against replacement.
