Frigidaire Washer Filter Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Frigidaire washer "filters" are the drain pump coin trap screens, not inline water filters. The EFLS front-load series has a user-accessible drain pump filter behind the lower-left access door. FFTW top-load washers may not have a user-accessible filter — debris collects in the drain pump housing, accessible only by tilting the machine and removing the pump.
EFLS Front-Load: The Coin Trap Filter
The front-load filter is a cylindrical screen that catches debris before it reaches the drain pump impeller. It sits inside the pump housing and is accessed by twisting a round cap counterclockwise. Common items found in the filter: coins, buttons, hair ties, key fobs, tissue fragments, pet hair clumps, underwire bra wires, and pebbles.
When to Clean (Monthly)
- Place towels and a shallow pan at the base of the washer
- Open the small access door (lower-left front)
- Pull the small drain hose out (if equipped) and let residual water drain
- Twist the filter cap counterclockwise and extract it
- Remove all trapped debris. Rinse the screen under running water
- Reinstall and close the access door
When to Replace
The filter screen rarely needs replacement. Replace only if:
- The mesh screen is torn or perforated — debris passes through to the pump
- The twist cap thread is stripped — the cap does not seal, causing leaks
- The handle is broken — you cannot twist the cap to open

FFTW Top-Load: No User-Accessible Filter
Most Frigidaire top-load washers do not have a front-facing coin trap. Debris collects in the drain pump housing. If you hear rattling during drain or the washer is not draining properly:
- Unplug the washer and tilt it back (prop against the wall or have a helper hold it)
- Locate the drain pump at the bottom
- Disconnect the hoses and inspect the pump housing for debris
- Clean and reassemble
This is more involved than the front-load filter and is practical only as an occasional deep-clean, not a monthly routine.

What About Inlet Water Filters?
Frigidaire washers do not have inline water filters in the fill system. The water inlet valve has a small mesh screen at the inlet port (where the household supply hose connects) that catches sediment. If water fill is slow, check this screen — unscrew the supply hose from the back of the washer and inspect the screen in the valve inlet. Clean it with a small brush or vinegar if it is clogged with mineral deposits.

Laundry Mesh Bags as Prevention
Using mesh laundry bags for items with small fasteners (bras, garments with hooks/buttons) prevents debris from reaching the filter and pump. This is especially effective for preventing underwire bra wires from jamming the drain pump impeller — one of the most common Frigidaire front-load pump failures.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

FAQ
Does my Frigidaire washer have a filter?
EFLS front-load: yes — coin trap filter behind lower-left access door. FFTW top-load: no user-accessible filter (debris collected in drain pump housing).
How often should I clean my Frigidaire washer filter?
Monthly for front-load coin trap. Check after washing items with loose buttons, coins in pockets, or items with hooks.
Can a clogged filter cause E21 error?
Yes — the E21 drain error is most commonly caused by debris in the coin trap filter. Clean the filter first before suspecting pump failure.
Is there a water inlet filter on my Frigidaire washer?
A small mesh screen inside the water inlet valve port. Not a replaceable filter — clean it if fill is slow by removing the supply hose and inspecting the screen.
