Frigidaire Washer E52: Motor Tachometer Signal Lost
What E52 Means
The washer motor has an integrated tachometer (speed sensor) that sends RPM data to the board. E52 fires when the board commands the motor to run but receives no speed feedback from the tachometer. The motor may still physically turn, but the board cannot verify speed and halts operation.

Why the Tachometer Matters
The board adjusts motor speed throughout the cycle: slow tumble for wash, medium for rinse, high speed for spin. Without tachometer feedback, the board cannot confirm the motor responded to speed commands. Running without feedback risks overspeed during spin (unsafe), stall during tumble (clothes not washing), or excessive current draw.
Common Causes
Tachometer magnet detached. The tachometer uses a magnet on the motor rotor and a pickup coil on the stator. If the magnet cracks or detaches from the rotor (vibration damage), the pickup coil sees no rotation signal.
Pickup coil failed. The coil has an open winding. Measure across the tachometer leads: expect 50-200 ohms. Infinite means the coil is open.
Connector corrosion. The tachometer signal wires connect through the motor harness to the board. Corroded pins attenuate the signal below detection threshold.
Motor carbon brushes worn (brush-type motors only). On models with brushed motors, worn brushes cause intermittent contact with the commutator. The motor runs erratically, and the tachometer signal reflects this erratic behavior, triggering E52.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Diagnosis
- Unplug. Access the motor (front-load: remove front panel and drum; top-load: access from beneath).
- Locate the tachometer connector (separate from the motor power connector, typically a 2-pin plug).
- Measure resistance: 50-200 ohms expected. Infinite = open coil.
- If tachometer is good, inspect the motor and connector for brush wear (if brush type) or corrosion.

FAQ
Can I still use the washer with E52? No. The board halts all motor-dependent operations without speed feedback.
E52 during spin only. Normal tumble works. The tachometer signal may be adequate at low speeds but drops below threshold at high speed. A weakening magnet or degraded coil produces this pattern.
Do brushless (inverter) motors get E52? Yes, but less commonly. Inverter motors use electronic speed sensing instead of a mechanical tachometer. E52 on inverter models usually indicates a board communication issue with the motor driver.
