Frigidaire Refrigerator Won't Start? Causes & Fix

Dead unit versus no cooling#
Frigidaire is built by Electrolux, and its refrigerators fail to start in two distinct ways. A completely dead unit — no lights, no sounds, no display — is almost always a power or board problem. A refrigerator whose light works but that never cools has power to the board but a failed compressor circuit, most often the start relay. Which one you have narrows the search immediately.

Working through the causes#
Power supply or outlet (30%). No power reaching the refrigerator points to a tripped breaker, a failed or GFCI-tripped outlet, or a loose plug. Test the outlet with a lamp or phone charger, reset the breaker and any GFCI, and reseat the plug before opening the unit. Start relay or overload protector (30%). These sit on the compressor at the rear bottom, and when they fail the compressor cannot start — you often hear a click every few minutes with no cooling. The relay is an inexpensive part and is replaced as a set with the overload. Main control board (20%). The board runs every function, and a power surge can kill it outright, leaving a dead or erratic unit. Inspect the board for scorched or bulged components; a damaged board is replaced. Compressor overload trip (15%). If the compressor overheats from dirty coils, a hot room, or low refrigerant, its internal overload trips and cuts power until it cools. Clean the condenser coils and improve ventilation, then see whether it restarts once cool. Damaged power cord (5%). The cord can be crushed by the refrigerator rolling over it during cleaning or chewed by rodents. Inspect it from the plug to the cabinet for cuts or crushed spots and replace it if damaged.

- Disconnect power at the circuit breaker or unplug the unit before inspecting anything internal.
- Confirm the outlet is live with a lamp or charger, and reset the breaker and any GFCI.
- Decide which failure you have: fully dead points to power or board; light-on-no-cooling points to the start relay.
- Restore power and listen at the rear bottom for the compressor clicking on its overload.
