Frigidaire Refrigerator SY CE: Communication Error
What SY CE Means
SY CE (System Communication Error) fires when the main control board at the bottom rear of the refrigerator loses its data link with the user interface/display board mounted on the door or at the top front. These boards exchange temperature data, compressor commands, and user settings through a wiring harness.

Common Causes
Loose harness connection. The wiring harness runs from the main board (bottom rear) through the cabinet, along the side or top, to the UI board (front display). Connectors at either end can loosen from compressor vibration over years.
Corroded connector pins. Refrigerators operate in kitchen humidity. Connector pins oxidize gradually, increasing resistance until the serial communication signal degrades below the detection threshold.
Damaged harness. The wire run passes through or near the cabinet hinge area on some models. Door opening can chafe the insulation at this point over years.
Board failure. The communication transceiver on either board can fail. The main board runs in a warmer environment (near compressor) and is more prone to heat-related failures.
Diagnosis
- Unplug the refrigerator. Access the main board (remove the rear access panel at the bottom).
- Reseat the harness connector at the main board. Press firmly until it clicks.
- Access the UI board (varies by model: may require removing a panel from the door or the top grille area). Reseat the harness connector there.
- Plug back in. If SY CE clears, the connection was the issue.
- If SY CE persists after reseating, inspect the harness visually along its run for physical damage. Test continuity through each wire from end to end.
- If the harness is intact, one of the boards has a failed communication circuit.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Determining Which Board Failed
With the harness confirmed good, observe the display:
- Display completely dark: UI board is likely failed.
- Display shows SY CE but has power: Main board's communication output is the failure.

FAQ
Does the refrigerator still cool with SY CE? On some models, the main board operates in a default cooling mode when communication is lost, keeping the compressor running at a fixed duty cycle. On other models, the board shuts down all cooling. Check your freezer temperature.
SY CE appeared after a power outage. Power surges during restoration can damage communication circuits. Try reseating connectors first. If that fails, board replacement may be needed.
Is SY CE the same as SY CF or SY EF? No. SY CE is a communication error between boards. SY CF is a condenser fan error. SY EF is an evaporator fan error. Different systems.
