A squeal or thump that lines up with each drum revolution often means the drive belt is cracking or fraying — inspect it for glazing and splits. A dry scraping sound is the drum glides, the plastic pads the drum front rides on, worn thin enough that metal touches metal. A constant high whine is the idler pulley, the spring-loaded wheel that keeps belt tension; its bearing dries out and sings. Each is an inexpensive part.
