Why it clicks when it shouldn't#
The click is the spark igniter firing. It's supposed to fire only while you hold a knob at "light," so continuous clicking means something is telling the spark to keep going — most often a water or food bridge across the electrode, sometimes a switch stuck closed. It isn't a fire risk when the burner is already lit or off, but the constant sparking wears the module and switch, so it's worth clearing.
Moisture on the igniter (most common)#
Water on the ceramic electrode shorts it and triggers the spark over and over. Lift the cap and head, blot every drop you can see, and dry the area — a fan or a cool hair dryer speeds it along. Give it time; trapped moisture can take an hour or two to fully evaporate, so hold off on cooking until the clicking quits.

Food and grease around the electrode#
Carbonized spatter around the electrode base conducts just like water, bridging the gap and firing the spark. Wipe the electrode and its surround with a dry cloth and lift off any baked-on food with a non-metal brush so nothing spans the gap.
A stuck switch or a bad module#
Each knob has a small switch that fires the spark at "light." Grease, wear, or a tired spring can hold it closed so the spark never stops; flicking the knob between light and off several times sometimes frees it, and if not, the switch is replaced. If drying and cleaning change nothing, the spark module — the one part that feeds every igniter — may be internally shorted and firing on its own.
