Bosch Washer Won't Start — Power, Door Lock & Board Diagnosis
A Bosch compact washer that refuses to start can mean several different things, and the exact symptom narrows the diagnosis significantly. "Won't start" might mean: completely dead (no lights, no display), display works but pressing Start does nothing, or the machine responds to commands but does not begin a cycle. Each scenario points to a different system — power supply, user interface, door interlock, or control logic.
Bosch 300/500/800 series washers (WAT/WAW/WGA models) require all of the following conditions before the control board will initiate a cycle: mains power present, program selector in a valid position, door physically closed and electrically confirmed locked, no active error codes blocking operation, and the Start button pressed. Failure of any single condition prevents cycle start.
Scenario 1: Completely Dead — No Display, No Lights, No Response
Power supply chain diagnosis:
- Check the wall outlet — plug in another device to verify.
- Check the circuit breaker in the electrical panel. Bosch washers should be on a dedicated 15A or 20A circuit.
- Inspect the power cord for damage — especially where it exits the rear of the machine (can be crushed against the wall in tight laundry closets).
- Check the EMI filter (power line filter) — a small component at the cord entry point inside the machine. If this fails open, it cuts all power. Access by removing the top panel.
Parts: $25-$50 (EMI filter) or $0 (breaker reset) | Professional repair: $80-$150

Scenario 2: Display Works But Start Button Does Nothing
Door interlock not engaging:
- Close the door firmly. On Bosch models, the striker must fully engage the lock receiver.
- Listen for the lock click — the bimetallic actuator should audibly engage within 1-3 seconds of pressing Start.
- Check the door lock indicator (key icon) — it should go solid when locked. If it blinks or stays off, the lock is not confirming.
- On 800 series with Home Connect: check if the child lock (key symbol) is active — this disables physical buttons but allows app control.
Repair: Replace the interlock (BSH 00638259) if it clicks but does not confirm, or check the door striker alignment if the lock does not even attempt to engage.
Parts: $45-$85 | Professional repair: $150-$280
Scenario 3: Machine Acknowledges Start But Cycle Does Not Begin
The display shows a cycle selected and Start was acknowledged (time appears) but no water enters and nothing happens:
- Check for error codes. A stored error from the previous cycle may be blocking start. Rotate selector to OFF, then back to your program, and try again.
- Check the delay start. If a delay was accidentally set, the machine is waiting. Look for a clock icon or delayed start time on the display. Cancel delay by pressing Start/Pause.
- AquaStop hose triggered. If the supply hose AquaStop system has tripped (red indicator in the transparent window), no water enters and the cycle effectively stalls at the fill phase. Replace the AquaStop hose.
- Supply valves closed. Check both hot and cold valves at the wall.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Scenario 4: Display Partially Working or Flickering
Indicates power supply instability or ribbon cable issue:
- Unplug for 5 minutes (hard reset). The board capacitors may need to fully discharge.
- After reconnecting, if the display is partially functional (some segments missing, backlight on but no text), the user interface board or ribbon cable has failed.
- Remove the top panel and check the ribbon cable ZIF connectors between the UI board and main board.
Parts: $15-$40 (ribbon cable) or $80-$350 (board replacement) | Professional repair: $80-$480
Scenario 5: Machine Starts Then Immediately Stops
The cycle begins (you hear water, door locks) then aborts within seconds:
- Door lock signal dropping. The lock engages but immediately loses confirmation signal. See door latch failure guide.
- AquaShield triggered. If residual water is in the base pan from a previous leak, the float sensor triggers E:23 immediately on cycle start.
- Motor inverter fault. If the board commands the motor and receives no response, it may abort immediately with E:21.

Quick Diagnostic Flowchart
- Any display at all? No → power supply chain (outlet, breaker, cord, EMI filter)
- Display works but Start does nothing? → door lock or child lock
- Cycle starts then stops? → door lock signal, AquaShield, or motor fault
- Display shows error code? → see Bosch error code guide for specific code
- Display works, no error, Start acknowledged but nothing happens? → supply valves, AquaStop, or delay start
Prevention
- Install surge protection. Power spikes can damage the EMI filter and control board, causing sudden no-start conditions.
- Address intermittent door lock issues promptly. A lock that hesitates today will fail completely soon.
- Keep the service flap area clean. Residual water from previous filter cleanings can trigger AquaShield false positives.
- Know your child lock procedure. On Bosch models, child lock is typically activated by holding two specific buttons for 3 seconds. Accidental activation is common.

FAQ
Q: My Bosch washer is completely dead. Is the control board fried?
Not necessarily — and not the most likely cause. Check the outlet, breaker, and EMI power filter first. The board is the last suspect for a complete no-power condition.
Q: I hear the door lock click when I press Start, but nothing else happens. Why?
The lock clicked (PTC heater fired) but the confirmation signal may not have reached the board — worn microswitch inside the lock assembly. Replace the interlock.
Q: My Bosch washer starts from the Home Connect app but not the physical buttons. What is wrong?
The child lock is active (disables physical buttons but allows remote control). Deactivate child lock per your model's procedure (typically hold two designated buttons for 3 seconds).
