A lint-clogged condenser#
This is the single most common reason a Bosch dryer overheats. Lint packs into the condenser fins over time, and once airflow through the heat exchanger drops, hot air recirculates instead of shedding its heat, so drum temperature climbs. Pull the condenser out from the lower front panel and vacuum the fins thoroughly — on many units this alone brings temperatures back to normal.
Sensor and thermostat faults#
The NTC temperature sensor tells the control board how hot the air actually is. When it drifts and reads lower than the true temperature, the board keeps heating past the safe point, so the sensor is replaced when its resistance no longer matches the chart. Behind it sits a safety thermostat that is meant to cut the heat if regulation fails; if that thermostat sticks closed, there is no backstop and the heater runs unrestricted. A severely packed lint filter contributes to both problems by concentrating heat instead of distributing it.

A welded element relay#
On WGA-board models the element is switched by a relay on the control board. If that relay welds shut, current flows to the heating element continuously no matter what the board commands, and the fix is a board replacement. This is the least common cause but the one to suspect when the dryer overheats even with a clean condenser, a good sensor, and a healthy thermostat.
How to check it yourself#
- Stop and cool the dryer with the door open if the cabinet is hot.
- Clean the lint filter and confirm it is not blinded by softener film.
- Vacuum the condenser fins from the lower front panel — the highest-yield fix.
- Feel the exterior on the next short load. Still hot points to the sensor, thermostat, or relay.
