What the display is telling you
F40 means the brand points at the touchpad you press, the cooktop power control board that drives the zones, or the wiring between them. A breaker reset is the only owner step; if the code returns, which part has failed is decided by testing, so book a technician rather than buying a board.
Error codes

|---|---|
| F40 | There may be a problem with the User Interface (Touchpad), the Cooktop Power Control Board, or the associated wiring. |
What you notice alongside F40
- Keys do not respond — Points at the touchpad side.
- Keys respond but zones do not heat — Points at the power board side.
- The code appears at power-up — A start-up check between the two failing.
- NEAR MISS: a pan sits on the controls — Pressure on the panel is a different code; clear it first.
What triggers F40, ranked
- Touchpad failed — The brand names it first: the touch electronics under the keys stop working or misread presses.
- Power control board failed — Second: the board that switches power to the zones fails, often from heat.
- Wiring or connector between them — Third: a loose or heat-damaged cable produces the same code as either board.
- Power event — Least likely to persist: a reset clears it.
Diagnostic order
- Breaker reset — Rules out a passing error.
- Test whether the keys respond — Separates touchpad from power board.
- Test whether any zone heats — Keys working and zones dead point at the power board.
- Technician tests both boards — Under the glass, with the power off.
Reset and owner-safe checks
- Breaker reset — Switch the breaker off for a minute, then on.
About 2 min
- Key test — Press each key and note whether the display responds.
About 3 min
- Zone test — Switch on one zone with a pan and note whether it heats.

- STOP here if the next check needs a panel off — Anything behind a panel is a power-off technician job, and the tests that follow it are made on live circuits.
Safety first
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep water away from the controls while the cooktop is powered, and never lift the glass top to look underneath.
When a reset is not enough
Call when the code returns after a reset, and pass on what the key and zone tests showed: dead keys point at the touchpad, live keys with no heat point at the power board. Either repair means lifting the cooktop with the power off.

Generalized information
This is generalized information: it reads F40 the way Amana documents it for Amana electric and induction cooktops with touch controls. It does not apply to Amana gas cooktops, Amana ranges, whose surface codes are listed with the oven codes, or sister brands on the same platform, whose lists can read differently. No model-specific page for F40 exists yet; when one does, it is the more specific answer for that model line.
