The short answer
These codes cover a machine that will not drain, or has excess water left in it, and the entry carries an explicit note: check the error history, and if there are no error codes for electrical problems, the problem is mechanical — do not replace the control. Expect standing water, and expect to find a blockage.
Whirlpool dishwasher code as the manufacturer publishes it
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 8-1, 8-2 | Will not drain, or excess water in the dishwasher. Note: check the error history; if there are no error codes for electrical problems, the problem is mechanical. Do not replace the control. |
What you observe alongside the code
- Standing water in the tub at the end of a cycle — The defining symptom.
- No drain sound at all — Points at the pump rather than a blockage.
- A buzz or hum instead of the usual drain note — A pump trying to turn against something jammed.
- The sink gurgling while the machine drains — Points at the shared standpipe.
What triggers it, most likely first
- A hard object across the pump inlet — First: a fruit stone, a bone chip or a shard of glass closes the inlet completely, which is exactly this symptom.
- A loaded filter or blocked sump — Second: the commonest gradual cause, and free to clear.
- A kinked, crushed or blocked drain hose — Third: a hose flattened when the machine was pushed back into its opening drains nothing.
- A disposal inlet plug never removed, or a blocked standpipe — Last: it closes the path outside the machine, and the sink usually complains first.
Check in this order, and why
- Listen during a drain attempt — Silence, hum and a normal note each point somewhere different.
- Bail the tub and clear the filter, sump and pump inlet — The blockage is reachable from inside the tub more often than not.
- Feel the drain hose behind the machine for a crush — Free, and it catches the installation-damage cases.
- Check the disposal port and standpipe last — Outside the machine, and cheap to test with a bucket of water.
Clearing the code, then the owner-safe checks
- Bail and sponge the tub dry — Everything after this is easier and safer.

- Clear the filter, sump and pump inlet by hand — Gloves on: glass and bone chips are what you are feeling for.

- Straighten the drain hose and lift its high loop into the bracket — A hose out of its bracket drains backwards.

- STOP HERE if the pump is silent with the path clear — That is the pump or its wiring, under the tub.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker before removing the toe panel or the inner door panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the supply is not switched at the door. Bail any standing water out of the tub before working underneath, and go into the sump with gloves and a light — broken glass collects there.
When this code is a service call
Call when the sump and pump inlet are clear, the hose is sound, and the pump makes no sound at all during a drain attempt — that is the pump or its circuit under the tub. Call promptly in any case if standing water has been sitting with a full load for more than a day or two, because the smell outlasts the repair.

Which model lines this reading applies to
This reading of 8-1 and 8-2 applies to Whirlpool-built built-in dishwashers of the generation whose service documentation publishes this code, which is where the manufacturer documents it. A machine with a mechanical timer and no diagnostic display does not produce it, and the same characters can be published against a different fault on a KitchenAid or Maytag-badged unit from the same platform. Filter and sump designs differ across this platform, and how much of the pump inlet is reachable from inside the tub varies with them. Where a model-specific page exists for your unit it is linked above and is the more specific answer: component resistances, connector positions and part numbers differ by family and belong there.
