The Lr code on a Speed Queen washer stands for Locked Rotor — the motor controller detected that the drive motor shaft is being held stationary despite receiving power. The motor is trying to turn but something is preventing it. This is distinct from a motor failure (where the motor itself is dead) — with Lr, the motor is alive but physically cannot move.

The motor is overbuilt for residential use, which means Lr in a residential setting almost always indicates a mechanical obstruction rather than motor inadequacy.

What Causes a Locked Rotor

Overloaded drum: Too much weight for the motor to move from a standstill. Speed Queen's commercial motor handles more weight than consumer brands, but physics has limits. Large comforters, waterlogged rugs, or excessively heavy loads can stall even a commercial motor.

Foreign object between inner and outer tub: Coins, underwire, small garments wedged between the spinning drum and the stationary outer tub create mechanical interference. The motor cannot overcome the friction.

Seized drum bearing: The main bearing (where the drum shaft passes through the outer tub) has seized from wear or corrosion. The drum cannot rotate at all. Speed Queen bearings last longer than consumer brands (15-20 years vs 8-12) but eventually wear.

Broken drive belt (belt-drive models): On some Speed Queen models, a broken belt allows the motor to spin freely (no load) but the drum does not turn. The motor controller detects the mismatch between expected and actual load.
