Speed Queen Washer E3: Heater Relay Failure on Heater-Equipped Models
E3 on a Speed Queen washer indicates the control board detected a malfunction in the water heater circuit. This code applies specifically to models equipped with an internal water heater (primarily the FF7 front-load series) — models without an internal heater will not display E3.
Which Speed Queen Models Have Water Heaters?
Not all Speed Queen washers include an internal heater:
- FF7 front-load series: Internal heater for hot wash boost and sanitize cycles. E3 applies.
- TR/TC top-load series: No internal heater. Uses household hot water supply directly. E3 does not apply.

What E3 Detects
The board monitors the heater relay circuit for:
- Relay stuck open: Board commands heater on, but no current flows. Water does not heat.
- Relay stuck closed (welded): Board commands heater off, but current continues. Water overheats. This is the more dangerous condition.
- Heater element open circuit: The element winding broke — zero current despite relay closing.
Diagnosis
- Unplug the washer
- Access the heater (rear panel removal, heater mounted on the outer tub)
- Disconnect heater terminals. Measure resistance: expect 12-20 ohms. OL = open element.
- Test insulation: measure between each heater terminal and chassis ground. Should be OL (infinity). Any reading = ground fault.
- Check the relay on the main board: listen for the click when the cycle calls for heating. No click = relay driver circuit or relay failure.

Parts and Pricing
| Part | Cost |
|---|---|
| Heater element | $45-$80 |
| Main control board (if relay failed) | $120-$200 |
Professional repair: $200-$400. Heater replacement takes 45-60 minutes. Board replacement takes 30-45 minutes.
Safety Note
If E3 is accompanied by water that is scalding hot during wash cycles, the relay may be welded closed — the heater stays on regardless of board commands. This is a burn hazard. Unplug the machine and do not use until repaired.
