Smart vs Regular Dishwasher Repair Cost
A smart dishwasher costs roughly 20% more per repair than a plain one — the premium comes from the Wi-Fi module, the connected control board, and the auto-dose dispenser. The core parts (drain pump, wash motor, inlet valve) cost the same. That 20% is the smallest smart premium of any category — well below…
The smart-specific parts#
- Wi-Fi module. Bosch Home Connect (SHP/SHX 800 series) uses a dedicated module behind the door panel; LG ThinQ uses a separate Wi-Fi board (EBR85608218); Samsung DW80R models integrate Wi-Fi into the main PCB (DD82-01139B), which matters for repair cost below.
- Leak sensor. Smart dishwashers add a floor-level sensor that alerts your phone before water damage spreads; Samsung's LeakSensor (DD81-02907A) sits in the base pan, and Bosch pairs a sensor with AquaStop for notification (mechanical AquaStop alone cannot notify).
- Auto-dose dispenser. GE Profile (PDT785SYNFS) and Bosch 800 include automatic detergent dosing; GE's PowerClean dispenser (WD28X27235) doses for many loads. These are mechanical pumps with seals that wear in a few years.
Bosch is the cheapest smart repair#
On our repair data, Bosch's Home Connect is the most reliable smart [dishwasher](/blog/repair-or-replace-dishwasher) platform, and its Wi-Fi module is physically separate from the main board — so a connectivity failure does not drag the whole board with it. Bosch is picky about the router, though: WPA2-PSK only (not WPA3), 2.4 GHz only, no MAC filtering. About 15% of "smart feature not working" Bosch calls are fixed purely in router settings. The single most common Bosch smart repair is trivial: the ribbon cable from the Wi-Fi module to the door-handle antenna works loose from door-slam vibration over a couple of years, and reseating it is a ten-minute job.

Samsung's integrated board is the trade-off#
Samsung folds Wi-Fi into the main control board on most models, so a Wi-Fi failure means a board replacement — the DW80R board (DD82-01139B) runs wash logic, sensors, and Wi-Fi on one PCB. If SmartThings connectivity dies and a reset will not revive it, the whole board goes.
Where the 20% actually goes#
It helps to see why the premium is only about 20% here when a smart fridge can hit 60%. A dishwasher's smart layer is thin: there is no touchscreen to crack, no camera to fail, no voice hardware — just a Wi-Fi radio, a couple of sensors, and maybe a dosing pump. So the added failure surface is small, and much of it (a loose antenna ribbon, a router misconfiguration) is cheap or free to fix. The parts that do drive real cost are the ones baked into the board on brands like Samsung, where you cannot replace the radio without replacing everything around it. That single design choice — separate Wi-Fi module versus integrated — explains most of the repair-cost spread between smart dishwasher brands, which is why it is worth knowing before you buy rather than after something fails.

Should you buy smart?#
Buy smart if you want leak-detection alerts (genuinely useful against water damage), remote start to run cycles off-peak, or auto-dose to cut detergent waste. Buy traditional if you just load and run it each evening — the convenience payoff is smaller than for washers and dryers, because a dishwasher's feedback loop is short: you load, start, and unload within a few hours anyway. The leak sensor is the one feature most worth the premium on its own, since a single prevented leak can outweigh the entire smart cost gap.
