GE SmartHQ and Whirlpool#
GE SmartHQ tracks cycle-level and monthly energy for connected Profile and Cafe appliances and recommends eco alternatives. Whirlpool's data is thinner — cycle counts and rough per-cycle estimates, without detailed kWh on most models. If you want precise Whirlpool numbers, put an energy-monitoring smart plug (TP-Link Kasa, Emporia Vue) between the outlet and the appliance and read it there.
Turning the data into savings#
- Find your most expensive appliance. Dryers are usually the heaviest single draw; refrigerators run around the clock but sip per hour; washers and dishwashers cost the least to run.
- Shift heavy cycles off-peak. On time-of-use pricing, schedule the dryer and dishwasher for off-peak hours (often overnight) right from the app.
- Wash cold. Heating water is 80-90% of a washer's energy, so a cold cycle with modern HE detergent can cut washer energy by up to 90% on most loads.
- Use sensor dry, not timed. Sensor cycles stop when clothes are dry and save roughly 15-30% per load versus a fixed timer.

What the standby number means#
That 1-5 watts of continuous Wi-Fi draw is small per hour but constant, so it shows up as a steady baseline on the dashboard rather than a spike. It is not a fault and not worth chasing — it is simply the cost of keeping the appliance connected, and it is dwarfed by a single heated dry or hot wash.
How accurate is it?#
These readings are modeled from component wattage and cycle time, not measured at the plug, so treat them as within about 10-20% of reality. That is plenty for comparing cycles or spotting a trend, but for exact figures use a plug-in meter (Kill-A-Watt) or a whole-home monitor (Sense, Emporia Vue). Samsung allows data export in some regions; LG and GE do not, though an IFTTT rule can log cycle events to a spreadsheet for your own records.

How to read a per-cycle number#
The most useful view is per-cycle kWh, because it lets you compare choices directly. Run the same load on Eco and on a heavier cycle and the app shows the energy difference in black and white — often the Eco or cold option costs a fraction of the "deep clean" one for the same result. Do the same across appliances over a week and the pattern is usually clear: one or two machines account for most of the bill, and those are the ones worth optimizing. Chasing the small draws rarely pays off; concentrating on the heaviest one does.
Per-appliance data vs. a whole-home monitor#
App-based monitoring only sees the appliances that report it, and only as modeled estimates. If you want a full picture — including the water heater, HVAC, and older non-connected appliances — a whole-home energy monitor at the panel (Sense, Emporia Vue) measures actual draw for everything at once. The two approaches complement each other: use the appliance apps to tune individual cycles, and a whole-home monitor to catch the big loads the apps cannot see.
