LG ThinQ App Not Connecting: Drops & Diagnosis
If LG ThinQ connects and then drops every few hours, the cause is almost always DHCP lease renewal on LG's Wi-Fi chip — set a static IP reservation for the appliance. If it never connects at all, you are on a 5 GHz network. Neither is a hardware fault.
The disconnect-every-few-hours pattern#
LG appliances use a Realtek RTL8720DN Wi-Fi module with a known weakness at DHCP lease renewal: when the router's lease expires — often 24 hours, sometimes as short as 2 hours — the module drops offline instead of renewing cleanly. The durable fix is a DHCP reservation (static IP) for the appliance's MAC address, found under ThinQ then device then Network Info. Extending the router's lease time to 72 hours also helps. This pattern shows up across LRMVS3006S, WM4200H and WM6500H, DLEX4200 and DLHX4072, and LDT7808 and LDP7808 models.
Pairing basics: 2.4 GHz only#
LG appliances connect only to 2.4 GHz, so if your router combines bands, use a separate 2.4 GHz SSID. Update the app to a current ThinQ version, since older builds lose compatibility with newer appliance firmware. To force re-pairing, factory-reset the Wi-Fi module by holding POWER for 10 seconds on most LG models until the display blinks — this clears stored credentials.

Smart Diagnosis without Wi-Fi#
LG Smart Diagnosis transmits data tones through the appliance's speaker that ThinQ decodes with your phone's microphone. Open ThinQ then device then Smart Diagnosis, hold the phone's mic against the speaker grille (bottom-right on LRMVS3006S refrigerators, top-right on WM4200H washers), and trigger the tone with the button combo for your unit. If it reports "Diagnosis Failed," background noise is too high — move closer and quiet the room. On 2023 and newer Wi-Fi models it can also run remotely through the cloud with no audio.
NFC tap-to-pair#
Some LG models offer NFC pairing — look for the logo near the control panel. Enable NFC in your phone, remove a thick case, and hold the phone's NFC antenna against the logo for 3 seconds. NFC only starts the handshake; you still enter Wi-Fi credentials through the ThinQ setup flow afterward. WM4200H and LRMVS3006S have NFC; LDT7808 dishwashers do not.

When it really is the board#
If ThinQ shows a persistent "Communication Error" and the display shows no Wi-Fi icon even after a factory reset, the Wi-Fi communication board has failed. On LRMVS3006S refrigerators the radio lives on the EBR-series board behind the display; on WM4200H washers it is a separate module (EBR84457301). LG covers Wi-Fi module failures for 1 year from purchase. The board is a genuine added part over a non-connected LG, but the motor, pump, and heater repairs are identical.
Step-by-step#
- Confirm the appliance is on a 2.4 GHz SSID, not a merged or 5 GHz one.
- Add a DHCP reservation for the appliance MAC to stop the periodic drops.
- Factory-reset the module (hold POWER 10 seconds) and re-pair in ThinQ.
- Update ThinQ so it matches current appliance firmware.
- Power-cycle 2 minutes, then wait about 5 minutes for it to re-register with LG's cloud.

Frequently Asked Questions#
Why does my LG appliance keep disconnecting from ThinQ?#
LG's Realtek module handles DHCP lease renewal poorly and drops when the lease expires. Add a static IP reservation for the appliance's MAC (ThinQ then device then Network Info) to stop the periodic disconnects.
How does LG Smart Diagnosis work?#
The appliance emits encoded tones through its speaker; you hold the phone's mic to the grille and ThinQ decodes them. On 2023 and newer Wi-Fi models it can run remotely through the cloud without audio.
ThinQ NFC pairing isn't working — what should I do?#
Enable NFC in your phone, remove a thick case, and hold the phone's NFC antenna against the appliance logo for 3 seconds. Not every LG model has NFC — check for the logo near the panel.
The bottom line#
Two patterns cover almost every ThinQ complaint, and neither starts as a hardware fault. If the appliance connects and then drops on a schedule, it is the DHCP lease renewal weakness in LG's Wi-Fi chip — a static IP reservation for the appliance's MAC address ends those scheduled drops for good, and it is the single highest-value fix on this page. If it never connects at all, you are on a 5 GHz network or a combined SSID steering the appliance off 2.4 GHz; splitting the band solves it. Work those two settings before touching the appliance. Only a persistent Communication Error that survives a 10-second factory reset, with no Wi-Fi icon on the display afterward, points at the communication board — and even then, every wash, dry, cook, and cooling function keeps running while you arrange the repair, because ThinQ is a layer on top of a fully working appliance, not the appliance itself.
