Smart Appliance Child Lock: What the App Can Lock
Samsung, LG, and GE apps can lock an appliance's physical control panel remotely, and some add attempt notifications and scheduling. The honest limit worth knowing first: smart child lock needs a live Wi-Fi connection to change state, and it never locks a door or a gas valve.
What "smart" adds over the panel button#
Traditional child lock is a button combination held on the appliance for a few seconds that freezes the panel locally. Smart child lock layers on remote toggling from your phone, attempt notifications on some brands when someone presses a locked panel, schedule-based locking on Samsung, and the option to lock every connected appliance at once. It is a convenience layer on top of the same panel lock — not a new safety mechanism.
Samsung SmartThings#
SmartThings toggles child lock for any connected Samsung appliance under the device's Settings. Its extras are the most complete: Routines can include child lock, so a bedtime routine locks the oven, cooktop, and washer together; Family Hub refrigerators add a separate screen lock so kids can't reorder food or change settings; and Bixby can lock the oven by voice if configured. All of it depends on Wi-Fi — if the connection drops, whatever state was last set simply persists until it reconnects.

LG ThinQ and GE SmartHQ#
ThinQ locks washers, dryers, ovens, and dishwashers, with a deliberate twist: you can enable child lock from the app but must disable it at the physical panel, so a child can't unlock it with a phone. On combo range models, LG's oven child lock also disables cooktop ignition. SmartHQ locks GE Profile and Cafe appliances under Controls, keeps the lock through power outages in non-volatile memory on most models, and lets you disable remote-start capability separately. On gas ranges, remember the lock disables electronic ignition but the gas valve may still turn by hand.
Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and Maytag#
The Whirlpool app offers a plain on/off child-lock toggle with no scheduling or attempt notifications — and KitchenAid and Maytag, on the same platform, behave identically. If you rely on scheduling or alerts, Samsung and LG are the fuller options.

The safety limits, stated plainly#
Child lock is convenience, not a childproofing system. It needs Wi-Fi to change on command, so a dropped connection can leave it in the wrong state. It never physically prevents opening a washer, dryer, or oven door — it only blocks a cycle start from the panel. On gas appliances it disables ignition but not the gas valve, and it does nothing about unplugging or the breaker. Pair it with physical measures — stove guards, oven-door locks, anti-tip brackets — for real child safety.
Troubleshooting#
- App says locked but the panel still responds: the command didn't reach the appliance over Wi-Fi. Reconnect and re-send it.
- Can't disable from the app: brands like LG require a physical panel override by design.
- Lock stuck after a power outage: use the panel button combination to clear it if the app can't connect.

Frequently Asked Questions#
Can I lock my smart oven remotely so kids can't use it?#
Yes — Samsung SmartThings, LG ThinQ, and GE SmartHQ all lock the oven's control panel from the app. It freezes the buttons and touchscreen but does not physically prevent opening the oven door.
Does child lock work if Wi-Fi is down?#
The last-set state persists, so a locked appliance stays locked. But you can't change the state remotely without Wi-Fi — you'd use the physical panel combination instead.
Can my child unlock a smart appliance from a phone?#
Only with access to your unlocked phone and app. Use phone-level security and any app PIN. LG adds protection here: its child lock can only be disabled at the panel, not from the app.
The bottom line#
Smart child lock is a genuine convenience — locking a panel from your phone, getting an alert when someone tries a locked oven, scheduling a bedtime lock — but it is not a substitute for physical child safety. The single fact worth internalizing is that it depends on a live Wi-Fi connection to change state, so a dropped connection can leave it locked or unlocked against your intent, and it never prevents a door from opening or a gas valve from turning by hand. Treat it as one layer: pair it with stove guards, oven-door locks, and anti-tip brackets, keep your phone and the brand app behind their own security so a child can't toggle it, and remember that on LG the lock can only be cleared at the physical panel by design. Used that way, it earns its place; relied on alone, it gives a false sense of security.
