Samsung microwaves contain a high-voltage capacitor that holds a lethal charge — around 2,100 volts — even after the unit is unplugged, and it lives in the compartment behind the cavity with the transformer and magnetron. The good news for a turntable fault is that you never need to go near it: the turntable motor, glass tray, roller ring, and drive coupler are all reached from inside the cavity or from the base, well away from the high-voltage side. Unplug the microwave first, and stay out of the rear compartment entirely.
How the Turntable Drive Works#
The turntable is driven by a small, low-voltage synchronous motor mounted under the cavity floor. Its shaft pokes through the floor and engages a plastic drive coupler, which spins the glass tray; on many models the tray also rides on a separate roller ring for support. The motor leads because it is the one powered part and it wears out — bearings seize or the winding opens, and the shaft simply stops while everything else runs normally. A drive coupler is next: the plastic hub that links the motor shaft to the tray cracks or strips, so the motor hums and turns but the tray sits still. A dirty or misseated roller ring, or a tray dropped onto the coupler at the wrong angle, makes the tray catch, wobble, or slip off the drive. Some models let you turn the turntable off in the settings, which surprises people who bumped the option. And least often, the control-board relay that switches the motor fails, so the motor never sees power even though it is perfectly good.
How to Narrow It Down#
- Unplug the unit, lift out the glass tray and roller ring, and check the center drive coupler for cracks or stripped splines.
- Clean the ring and the floor recess, then set the tray squarely back onto the coupler and test.
- Check the settings for a turntable on/off option that may have been switched off by accident.
- With the tray out, watch the coupler shaft on start — if it does not turn, the motor or its relay is the issue.
- A motor that does not turn and tests open is the fix; if the motor is good but never powered, suspect the board relay.
