Why a Samsung sparks inside#
A microwave only arcs when the energy field meets bare metal or a scorched, conductive surface. On Samsung units the usual culprits are the disposable mica waveguide cover on the right interior wall and the painted steel cavity — both are meant to be smooth and non-conductive, and both break down with splatter, heat, and harsh cleaners. Continued use lets the arcing burn through the coating and can permanently damage the magnetron.

Working through the causes#
Waveguide cover carbonized (most common). Samsung mounts a cardboard-like mica waveguide cover on the right interior wall — part DE71-60461A on ME21 models. Food splatter carbonizes on it over time, and the charred residue becomes conductive and arcs. Wipe it first; if the arcing continues or the cover is scorched or holed, replace the mica cover, which is an inexpensive slide-in part. Interior paint peeling (most common). Samsung stainless-look interiors can blister or peel from thermal cycling and harsh cleaners, exposing bare metal that sparks. Once the coating is broken the surface must be recoated with microwave-safe enamel or the cavity replaced — you cannot safely run it with bare metal showing. Rack support or coupler arcing (occasional). Over-the-range models with metal rack supports can corrode at their contact points and arc, and a metal turntable coupler can do the same. Clean any corrosion, make sure racks and the coupler seat properly, and remove any stray metal or foil from the cavity. Stirrer fan not rotating (occasional). Some Samsung microwaves use a stirrer fan to spread the energy evenly. If the stirrer motor stalls, energy concentrates in one spot and can arc there. Confirm the stirrer turns and service its motor if it does not.

- Unplug the unit or switch off its circuit breaker before looking inside; for a hardwired unit, cut power at the breaker.
- Inspect the right-wall mica cover for char or holes and the cavity paint for blisters.
