Why a heavy Maytag still shakes#

Maytag MHW front-load and MVW top-load washers carry a heavier concrete counterweight than a standard Whirlpool, commercial-grade bearings, and beefier suspension, all under a 10-year limited parts warranty on the drive motor and stainless drum. That extra mass normally damps vibration, so when a Maytag shakes noticeably the cause is usually more pronounced than on a lighter machine — and the heavier counterweight puts higher forces through worn suspension parts.

Vibration is a spin-balance problem, which is a different fault tree from a washer that drains but will not spin. Here the drive is working; the tub is just moving more than it should. The order to work is level and load first, then the suspension parts that control tub motion, and finally the drum bearing. Working that sequence keeps you from ordering an expensive shock or bearing set when the real fix was redistributing a bunched load or shimming a foot. It also matters because a tub allowed to bang for weeks will eventually chew up the very suspension parts you are trying to protect.

Check it yourself, in order#

1. Disconnect power at the outlet or breaker before any inspection.
2. On a new install, confirm the rear shipping bolts were removed — leaving them in causes violent shaking.
3. Run a spin with a balanced load and confirm the machine is level, adjusting the feet until none rock.
4. On a front-load, check the shock absorbers for wear and replace them as a pair if the tub moves freely.
5. On a top-load, inspect the suspension rods for a broken rod letting the tub drop.
6. Listen for a growing rumble under spin, which points at a worn drum bearing.

Prevent the repeat#

Balancing loads and keeping the washer level are the two simplest ways to stop vibration and to spare the shocks, rods, and bearing from the extra force the heavy counterweight creates when the unit is not level. Avoiding chronically overloaded spins also extends the life of the suspension hardware. If the machine sits on a raised or flexing floor, a plywood base or anti-vibration pads under the feet can absorb movement that the suspension alone cannot. And on any relocation, remember to reinstall or remove the transit bolts as appropriate, since a bolt left in place is the fastest way to shake a good machine apart.
