Maytag is a Whirlpool underneath#

The difference is the Commercial Technology designation: heavier-duty motor and suspension parts, and a 10-year limited parts warranty on the drive motor and stainless drum. Working through the causes#
Primary mechanical or motor (28%). The single most likely group: whatever mechanical part the cycle is waiting on when it stalls. Maytag's commercial-grade components last longer than standard equivalents but still wear, and the stored code narrows which one. Control board (18%). The board sequences every function — the Extra Power and Deep Fill options, motor speed, and drain timing. Power surges and vibration-fatigued solder joints are its usual failure modes, and a failing board stops cycles inconsistently or throws mixed codes. Inspect it for scorched areas and cracked solder joints once mechanical parts check out.
Extra Power circuit (15%, Maytag-specific). Maytag's signature Extra Power button adds wash action and an extra rinse through a dedicated solenoid and an extended timer routine on the board. When that solenoid or its control circuit fails, cycles can run short or hang. Test the Extra Power solenoid and its board circuit if the fault tracks with that button.
Drive motor or transmission (15%). A front-load motor drives the drum through a belt; top-loads use a direct-drive motor or a belt-driven transmission. A motor that cannot reach or hold speed throws F7E1 and stalls the cycle. Because the drive motor is under the 10-year warranty, check your warranty status before paying for this repair.
Drain system (12%). The drain pump sits at the bottom-left behind the front panel, held by three Torx T20 screws. Coins, buttons, and bra wires jam the impeller, giving a loud grinding noise, then F8E1 (drain timeout) or standing water. A pump that hums without draining is jammed or seized — clear it or replace it.
Water inlet (7%). The inlet valves fill the tub, and Maytag's Deep Fill option holds them open longer, which exposes the valve screens to more mineral scale. Slow or absent fill points here — check the hoses for kinks, confirm both supply valves are open, and clean the inlet screens.
Suspension or balance (5%). Front-loads use shock absorbers and top-loads use suspension rods; when these wear or break, the tub bangs and the washer aborts the spin to protect itself. Inspect the shocks or rods and replace worn parts so the tub can spin balanced.

Hanging during fill points to the inlet valves or supply — the machine is waiting for water that is not arriving fast enough. Stalling mid-wash points to the drive motor or control, since agitation is where the drive is worked hardest. Stopping at drain, especially with standing water, is the drain pump, and it usually pairs with F8E1. Aborting at spin — often after a bang or a heavy vibration — is the suspension or a balance fault, where the washer deliberately stops rather than spin an unbalanced tub. Note the stage, then read the stored code, and the two together usually name the part before you open a panel.
