Five things that move a repair bill more than the badge#

The expensive end#
For both brands, the costly repairs are the same three families: sealed systems (compressors and refrigerant loops), motors and stators, and main electronic control boards. Those are the jobs where the repair-or-replace question becomes real.
Use the 50% rule. If the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new appliance and the unit has passed 70% of its expected lifespan, replacement is the better long-term investment. On a younger machine, even an expensive repair is usually justified because most of the service life is still ahead of it.
Beyond the per-repair price#
Three factors matter as much as the invoice:
- Repair frequency. A brand that costs more per repair but needs 30% fewer of them is cheaper to own. Service rate data answers how often, which the price list cannot.
- Parts lead time. A part on back-order means a 1-7 day wait and a second visit. Wide distribution avoids that cost entirely.
- Energy and warranty. Current models from both brands use 15-30% less energy than units from a decade ago, which feeds directly into the repair-versus-replace maths, and extended coverage such as a 10-year motor warranty can remove the most expensive failure from the equation altogether.
