Shared platform, different grade#

Repair costs between the two are effectively identical — comparable parts supply, comparable labour, and enough shared part numbers that the invoice rarely knows which badge it is for.

What wears out on a Maytag#

Belts and pulleys go as a system. The belt stretches, cracks and eventually breaks; the idler pulley bearing seizes or turns noisy. Because reaching either one means the same disassembly, replacing both in a single visit is the cheaper way to do it.

Door latches loosen with use, and a latch that no longer fully engages the door switch gives you a dryer that starts sometimes. Tightening the strike screws often does it; a worn catch needs the assembly. Thermal fuses are the diagnostic trap — when one blows, the fuse is not the fault. Exhaust temperature spiked because the vent is restricted: lint build-up, a crushed hose, a blocked vent cap, or simply too much vent length. Replace the fuse without clearing the vent and you will be back. Heating elements are nichrome coils that fatigue over thousands of cycles until the coil finally breaks; the element lives in the rear housing on spade terminals. What wears out on a Whirlpool#

Heating elements first, especially in a heavy-use house. The upside is supply: Whirlpool elements are the most widely available dryer parts in the aftermarket, with several suppliers offering equivalents at competitive prices.

Drum rollers develop flat spots and worn bearings, which is the squeal or thump you hear building over months. Whirlpool uses the same roller design across many models, so parts are universal, and the rear rollers carry the most weight and wear first. On gas models, the valve coils open the gas valve once the igniter is ready; when a coil fails the igniter cycles on and off without ever sustaining flame — and those coils are among the most commonly stocked dryer parts anywhere. Lint trap housings crack at the stress points where the screen slides in, which costs efficiency and, more importantly, lets lint bypass into the cabinet, and replacement needs partial console disassembly. On older mechanical machines, a failing timer motor advances intermittently; the timer mounts in the console behind the knob and is a simple swap.

The verdict#

Heavy laundry household: Maytag. Average household: Whirlpool, same performance for less. Keep the vent clear either way — it is the single biggest factor in how long the heat system lasts.
