Maytag: mostly mechanical, mostly cheap#
The old gear transmission on top-loaders was famous for lasting, and when one finally lets go after 15-25 years the repair usually costs more than the machine is worth. Oil in the wash water and grinding during agitation are how it announces itself.
Suspension springs hold the tub on top-load models; break one and the tub tilts into the cabinet during spin, so replace them as a set to keep the support balanced. Front-load models use shock absorbers instead. Direct-drive machines on the Whirlpool platform use a motor coupling that is designed to break under overload — a humming motor with no agitation and no spin is the classic sign, and it is one of the cheapest repairs on any washer. Front-load door latches use a wax motor actuator and a position switch inside the front panel; when the wax motor quits, the door will not lock and the machine posts an error. And where a belt is used, the motor pulley, transmission pulley and belt wear together — fitting a new belt onto glazed pulleys just kills the new belt.

Samsung: watch the drum hardware#
DC errors mean the vibration sensor found too much imbalance; the machine retries three times, then stops. An occasional DC on a bulky load is normal, but persistent ones with ordinary loads point at worn suspension parts.
Bearings are the front-loader's clock. They carry forces above 1,000 pounds at maximum spin, and failure walks through three stages: a low rumble, then loud grinding, then a visibly wobbling drum. The bearings and the shaft seal must go in together. Spider arms are the related failure — an aluminium casting that corrodes from moisture, detergent residue and galvanic reaction with the stainless drum, weakening over 5-8 years until it can crack mid-spin. Door lock assemblies contain the wax motor, latch and position switch, and on AddWash models the small secondary door carries its own lock that can fail independently. Finally, nD means the machine is not draining; the debris filter behind the lower front panel collects small items and is the first thing to check.
