Where the water is really coming from#

A Maytag leaking onto the floor almost always traces to one of three places, and they are easy to tell apart by location. French-door models such as the MFI2570FEZ and MFW2055FRZ route the defrost drain through a tight channel that ices over when the small check flap fails, so defrost water has nowhere to go and overflows. Side-by-side and top-freezer models such as the MSS25C4MGZ and MRT118FFFZ more often crack at the push-in water-filter housing. And a door gasket that no longer seals lets humid room air inside, where it condenses and drips.

Working out which one is a matter of where the water appears. Pooling at the back near the compressor points at the defrost drain; water near the filter points at the housing; and moisture around the door edges points at the gasket.

The tell: recurring floor water with ice at the drain outlet is the defrost drain, while water only after changing a filter is the housing.

Check it yourself, in order#

1. Note where the water pools — back near the compressor, near the filter, or around the door edges.
2. For back-of-unit pooling, pull the fridge forward and look for ice at the defrost drain outlet.
3. Remove the rear freezer panel (six to eight screws) and pour a cup of warm water into the drain to melt any ice, using a turkey baster for directed flow.
4. If the drain freezes again, replace the drain check flap valve — a known Whirlpool-platform issue on 2015 to 2020 units.
5. Inspect the push-in filter housing for hairline cracks if the drip is near the filter.
6. Check the door gasket for gaps if you see condensation around the door.

Prevent the repeat#

Because a frozen defrost drain is the most common cause, replacing the check flap valve when you clear the drain stops it from icing up again on the affected 2015 to 2020 units. Seating replacement water filters carefully to avoid stressing the housing o-rings, and keeping the door gaskets clean so they seal, prevent the other two leak sources before they start. Catching a small leak early also matters because a drain left frozen eventually ices the evaporator and turns a minor puddle into a cooling failure.

Repair or replace?#

Clearing a drain costs nothing, and a check flap, filter housing, or gasket is an inexpensive part, so a leak almost never justifies a new refrigerator.
