The evaporator fan is essential for distributing cold air from the evaporator coils through both compartments. Without it, the coils freeze over (no airflow to absorb cold efficiently), the freezer temperature rises gradually, and the fresh food section gets no cooling.
Common Causes
Ice encasing the fan blade. A failed defrost system allows ice to build on the evaporator, eventually reaching the fan blade. The motor may be electrically functional but physically unable to turn.
Motor bearing failure. Evaporator fan motors operate in a freezing environment. Over years, bearing lubrication degrades, causing increased friction and eventual seizure.
Motor winding open. Thermal cycling (the fan stops during defrost and restarts after) causes expansion/contraction fatigue in the motor winding. Eventually a conductor fractures.

Diagnosis
- Unplug. Remove the freezer rear panel.
- Check for ice encasing the fan blade. If iced, manually defrost (unplug 24 hours) and repair the defrost system.
- If no ice, disconnect the fan motor connector. Measure resistance: 4-20 ohms expected. Infinite means open winding.
- If resistance is normal, spin the blade by hand. Stiffness indicates bearing failure.
- If motor and blade are fine, check wiring from motor to board.
