Maytag Refrigerator C2: Fresh Food Compartment Temperature Sensor Fault
C2 means the main control board detected an out-of-range reading from the fresh food compartment thermistor. This sensor monitors the refrigerator section (as opposed to the freezer, which is C1) and tells the board when to open or close the air damper that regulates cold air flow from the freezer into the fresh food section.
Fresh Food Temperature Regulation
Unlike the freezer (which relies primarily on compressor cycling), the fresh food section uses an air damper system. Cold air is generated in the freezer by the evaporator. A motorized damper in the partition between freezer and fresh food sections opens to allow cold air into the fresh food section, then closes when the target temperature (typically 37 degrees F) is reached.
C2 disrupts this damper control. Without knowing the fresh food temperature, the board cannot properly position the damper.

Immediate Food Safety Check
Insert a thermometer in the fresh food section:
- 33-40 degrees F: Safe. The sensor failure has not yet caused temperature drift.
- Above 40 degrees F for more than 2 hours: Discard perishable items (meat, dairy, prepared foods) per FDA guidelines.
- Below 32 degrees F: The damper may be stuck open, over-cooling the fresh food section. Fresh produce freezes and is ruined.
Sensor Location
The fresh food thermistor is mounted inside the refrigerator section, typically:
- Clipped to the rear wall panel near the air vent opening (where cold air enters from the freezer)
- Attached to a plastic bracket at the top-right or top-left corner of the fresh food compartment
- Sometimes concealed behind a light shield or diffuser panel
Look for a small sensor (bead or cylindrical) with a thin two-wire lead running into the rear wall.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Testing
Disconnect from the wire connector. Measure resistance:
| Temperature | Expected |
|---|---|
| 37 degrees F (normal fridge temp) | ~7,500 ohms |
| 70 degrees F (room temp if removed) | ~5,000 ohms |
If resistance is fixed, infinite, or near-zero regardless of temperature, the sensor has failed. If the sensor reads correctly, check the harness and the board's input circuit.
Impact of C2 on Fresh Food Temperature
When the board cannot read fresh food temperature, the damper behavior depends on the model's failsafe mode:
- Damper stays open: Fresh food section drops below freezing. Lettuce, fruits, beverages, and condiments freeze.
- Damper stays closed: Fresh food section warms to room temperature. Perishables spoil.
- Damper cycles on a fixed timer (some models): Temperature oscillates unpredictably.

Replacement
Part: Fresh food thermistor WPW10384185, $12-22.
Access: remove the light shield or rear panel inside the fresh food section (2-3 screws or clips). Unclip the old sensor. Disconnect. Connect new sensor. Clip into the same mounting position. Reinstall the panel.
C2 with Compressor Running
If the compressor runs continuously but the fresh food section is warm, the damper is likely stuck closed — C2 may be a symptom rather than the cause. Check damper operation: listen at the vent opening for the motorized damper opening after power cycling the refrigerator. If the damper motor is silent, replace the damper assembly (W10594330, $50-80) rather than just the thermistor.
